2016 Chevy Colorado – Cincinnati, OH
As far as mid-size trucks go, the 2016 Chevy Colorado in Cincinnati, OH is easily in the top three of the segment. Not only has it won the Motor Trend “Truck of the Year” award back-to-back in 2015 and 2016 because of it’s durable design and handling, but it also lands best-in-class horsepower and towing thanks to an advanced Duramax turbo-diesel engine. Even so, the other two gas-powered engines still provide impressive performance and efficiency. On top of all this, it even has plenty of Chevy’s advanced safety features on board.
The design isn’t just praised for its durability and handling, either, but also for its looks and ride quality.
As far as looks go, the Colorado is one of the better looking mid-size trucks on the market. It has a split-grille design, with two rectangular headlights sitting on either side of it. The front-fascia itself matches the rectangular shape of the headlights, and with a large and wide hood. The windshield and roofline are aerodynamic, and the sides have muscular bulging quarter panels, with a slightly raised stance — which is indicative of the extra space in the wheel wells above the tires. Overall, it’s aesthetically simple. But, that simplicity is also what makes it such a good-looking design. It’s a truck after all, so there is no need for cosmetic bells and whistles.
The aesthetic looks aren’t the only good thing about this design, and the quality of the design is important to note as well. The fully-boxed frame and shear-style mounts help to provide a smooth ride on whatever type of terrain the Colorado is traveling on. The tires are set up to help reduce road noise as well, and four-wheel disc brakes with Duralife brake rotors reduce wheel shudder. To further enhance the ride quality, the Colorado is also the first mid-size truck to have inlaid triple sealed doors installed, thick windshield, and side glass. Liquid applied sound deadener helps keep outside noise out.
This is one of the primary reasons Motor Trend praised the 2016 Chevy Colorado’s ride quality. After all, there is no quieter midsize truck on the road.
As far as performance goes, the Colorado has three engine choices: the entry-level 2.5-liter, 3.6-liter V6, and 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine.
The first engine is a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder, which puts out 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. It’s matched to a six-speed manual transmission, and returns up to 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Even for a mid-size truck that’s pushing out 200 horsepower, returning numbers like that is good — and foreshadows the type of excellent fuel economy it will experience when equipped with the diesel engine. It has a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.
Chevy’s available gas engine of choice for the Colorado is the 3.6-liter V6 engine. It cranks out a massive 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, and comes paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, generating up to 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. With four-wheel drive, the fuel economy decreases a bit. Returning this type of mpg is extremely impressive with power coming from a V6 engine, especially when considering the towing capacity has now doubled to 7,000 pounds.
Providing the Colorado with best-in-class horsepower and towing for the mid-size truck segment is the Duramax 2.8-liter Turbo-Diesel engine. This engine puts out 181 horsepower, but lands best-in-class torque at a whopping 269 lb-ft. Furthermore, it also gets best-in-class fuel economy sitting at 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, and a best-in-class towing capacity of 7,700 pounds.
This means the Colorado not only has best-in-class torque and towing, but also best-in-class fuel economy. Even if it’s smaller than a full-size truck, 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway is still an impressive feat.
Along with a durable design and impressive power and fuel-efficiency, the Colorado offers ingenious active safety technologies that are there to prevent, protect, and respond during the event of a collision.
Forward collision alert and lane departure warning are a few of the more notable features, and both work to help prevent a collision. If forward collision alert senses that a vehicle is getting too close, it will provide a warning to help the driver avoid a collision. Lane departure warning works in a similar manner, and uses cameras to detect if the vehicle is unintentionally drifting out of the intended lane. If it is, it will also provide a warning to help get you back onto your intended path.
These are only a few of the more advanced safety features found on the Colorado LT trim, and there are still plenty more to help you prevent, protect, and respond to a collision.
