Performance, style, and safety are three major factors for customers who are seeking a new crossover SUV. Unsurprisingly, two of the country’s premier car makers have focused in on each of these attributes as they were designing their new vehicles.

The 2017 Chevy Equinox and the 2017 Ford Escape are two of the most well-versed crossovers on the market. Drivers can expect excellent efficiency, the utmost comfort, and a number of protections if they opt for either of these two offerings. However, despite the slight similarities, it’s clear that the Equinox has risen above the competition.

Instead of debating the merits between pursuing the 2017 Chevy Equinox vs. the 2017 Ford Escape in Cincinnati, Ohio, let us do the work for you! This way, you’ll quickly understand why Chevy’s crossover SUV is the proper choice for you…

2017 Chevrolet Equinox Safety

Safety

You’ll find a number of safety features in both the 2017 Equinox and the 2017 Escape that will assist the driver and cut down on accidents. While Ford is seemingly focused on the “preventative” features, they didn’t seem to spend much time on the “protective” features. Predictably, Chevy’s engineers were all over that.

Chevy Equinox

Like many of Chevy’s vehicles, the Equinox includes a number of safety features that will protect, prevent, and respond. The “protective” features are rather common, including the six standard air bags and the high-strength steel safety cage. Meanwhile, the “preventative” features are a bit more innovative. Drivers can rely on a number of different technological offerings, including the Forward Collision Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Vision Camera, Rear Park Assist, Side Blind Zone Alert, and Lane Departure Warning to help prevent an accident from occurring in the first place.

Perhaps the most impressive inclusion is the OnStar Automatic Crash Response System. Thanks to this technological enhancement, drivers will be connected to an OnStar Advisor following an accident. The advisor will determine the severity of the crash, and then send emergency personnel to the location as soon as possible.

Ford Escape

The Escape’s safety capabilities are primarily focused on preventing those accidents. For instance, the Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward Collision Warning (with Brake Support) will maintain a safe distance from another vehicle. However, if the Escape detects that you’re approaching that vehicle at too great of a speed, the vehicle can manipulate its operation to apply the brakes. Meanwhile, the Lane-Keeping System will assure that you’re remaining on your intended path, while the Active Park Assist system will make it much easier to back into that space.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox Performance

Performance

Some customers may be enamored with the three engine options that accompany the 2017 Ford Escape. However, once you do a bit of a digging, you’ll recognize that the Equinox’s pair of engines are clearly superior.

Chevy’s two units deliver either the utmost power or the utmost efficiency (without completely compromising the opposite spec). It appears that Ford’s engineers attempted to produce an engine that was capable of delivering both of these attributes. Unfortunately, due to the underwhelming specs, it appears that they missed their mark.

Chevy Equinox

Are you looking for power or efficiency? Well, thanks to Chevy’s decision to offer a pair of engine options, drivers can focus in on the attribute that they value most. For those seeking economy, the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine provides all of the traits you’re be seeking. Thanks to the inclusion of the innovative “Eco Mode” and the reliable six-speed automatic transmission, drivers can expect this SUV to deliver a 31 mile per gallon highway fuel efficiency.

Meanwhile, the 3.6-liter V6 is for those who are seeking the utmost power, as the system is capable of delivering 301 horsepower. As a result of this muscle, drivers can expect an impressive 0-to-60 time of 6.7 seconds. Furthermore, the athletic engine also influences towing capacity, as drivers can reasonably expect to haul up to 3,500 pounds with their new SUV.

Ford Escape

Ford’s crossover SUV offers an additional, third engine offering. However, drivers shouldn’t confuse “more options” with “increased capabilities.” Actually, Ford Escape’s specs prove that it’s the contrary.

The 1.5-liter EcoBoost iVCT is considered the most efficient of the bunch, but drivers should still only expect a combined fuel efficiency that’s lingering around 26 miles per gallon. Predictably, the system doesn’t provide a whole lot of power, as drivers should anticipate only 179 horsepower and 177 pounds-feet of torque. The 2.5-liter iVCT is equally uninspiring, as the engine doesn’t provide much in the way of power (168 horsepower, 170 pounds-feet of torque) or efficiency (24 miles per gallon).

The 2.0-liter Twin-Scroll EcoBoost engine does admittedly provide impressive power specs at 245 horsepower and 275 pounds-feet of torque, although these numbers don’t even touch the power produced by the Chevy Equinox.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox Durability

Interior

Comfort. Technology. Spaciousness. As a customer, you have no reason to not expect these attributes to be included in a 2017 crossover SUV. Fortunately, you’ll find all of the features and amenities you’ve been seeking in both the 2017 Equinox and the 2017 Escape.

Chevy’s SUV is more focused on the driving experience, as their features cater to entertainment and comfort. Meanwhile, the Escape’s features tend to cater to those who are seeking style, especially on the exterior. These inclusions are certainly important if you’re looking to impress, but they’ll do little to cut down on your boredom during a commute.

Chevy Equinox

Both the inside and the outside of the 2017 Chevy Equinox provides a number of features that boost the SUV’s classiness and style. For those who are looking to impress their fellow drivers, the array of exterior features will undoubtedly be appreciated. Engineers included a number of parts that will catch the attention of nearby drivers, including the chrome-accented dual-port grille, the halogen projector-beam headlamps (with the available LED daytime running lamps), the rectangular dual exhaust, and the 18-inch aluminum wheels (available on the Premier version of the SUV).

The inside of the Equinox is just as nice. The leather-appointed seats are easy to sink into, providing occupants with maximum comfort. Meanwhile, the Multi-Flex sliding seats allow you to manipulate the interior to access maximum cargo room. By folding the seats down, drivers can unlock an incredible 63.7-cubic-feet of cargo space.

Of course, the interior is also highlighted by the Chevrolet MyLink system, which provides drivers with a host of music or navigation options. Drivers can even connect their smartphone to the system, and the Siri Eyes Free technology means they can access their preferred applications without taking their eyes off the road.

Ford Escape

The newest version of Ford’s crossover SUV has been redesigned for style and aerodynamics, but owners will probably focus on the vehicle’s other exterior attributes. For instance, the grille and hood provide sportiness to the vehicle, while the LED taillamp and halogen projector headlamps will certainly alert other drivers of your presence.

On the inside, owners can opt for whatever upholstery option they see fit, as the brand provides a number of different color and material options. Drivers will surely enjoy the heated steering wheel, which will allow them to escape the cold on those winter mornings. Of course, the SYNC 3 touchscreen provides the driver with access to a number of applications, making their drive a lot more enjoyable.
