Opportunity Knocks!

Automotive Facebook MarketingWhat is OPPORTUNITY?  Opportunity is an “exploitable set of circumstances with an uncertain outcome, requiring commitment of resources and involving exposure to risk.”

Each and every day, we are all presented with opportunities, both good and bad. What you expect to happen-what you believe in your mind-can have a tremendous impact on what actually does happen.

Take for instance, Hostess, who introduced the Twinkie in 1930, and it quickly became the company’s best-selling product. Today, Americans eat more than 500 million Twinkies each year, according to Hostess.

Americans spend about $47 million on Twinkies in a year, and sales are increasing, according to Information Resources, Inc., which tracks retail sales and trends. The original banana cream filled Twinkies (a banana shortage during WWII prompted the switch to vanilla cream) sold two for a nickel in the 1930’s.

During the Depression, a Chicago area baker saw the need for a low priced product and decided to use his shortcake pans, which sat empty except for the 6-week strawberry season, to create a new, year-round product. Twinkies are still produced in Chicago (about 1,000 each minute), which also boasts the highest per capita Twinkie consumption. This was truly an OPPORTUNITY that had a set of circumstances with an uncertain outcome, required commitment of resources, and involved an exposure to risk. How many opportunities do we let pass by – because we are afraid of what the outcome might be?

Your opportunities can be large or small. They can be as small as taking the opportunity to give someone a pat on the back for a job well done, or as large as making a cross country move for a better paying job. Whether large or small, and as noted by Chinese philosopher, Sun Tzu (c500-320bc), “Opportunities multiply as they are seized.”

Don’t be afraid to seize YOUR opportunities as they present themselves daily. I am thankful for the opportunities I encounter daily, as a part of the Sales team here at McCluskey Chevrolet, to meet and assist my customers individually with their specific vehicle needs! Thomas Edison (1847-1931), Inventor/Salesman, who frequently worked more than 40 hours straight, said, “Opportunity is missed by most people, because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”  If you feel as though your Opportunity isn’t knocking – build a door!
