Motor Trend Announces ‘Car Of the Year’ Winner for 2017
The beginning of every calendar year starts with automotive shows around the world showcasing the brilliance of domestic and foreign car brands alike. After the final auto show wraps up in early summer, car enthusiasts look forward to the Specialty Equipment Market Association, or SEMA Show. This annual event highlights the efforts of aftermarket product companies who partner with auto brands in order to create concept versions of their models. Year after year, the automotive industry follows the same pattern, before culminating with the most prestigious industry recognition in history – Motor Trend’s ‘Of The Year’ Awards. For 2016, the award show results were nothing short of thrilling for the Chevy dealers Dayton Ohio offers, as well as the rest of the Chevrolet dealerships worldwide.
Motor Trend Awards and Their Importance
Motor Trend was founded back in 1949, and has been an industry leader ever since, comprised of Motor Trend magazine, MotorTrend.com, Motor Trend Auto Shows, Motor Trend OnDemand subscription service, and the renowned ‘Of The Year’ Award program. In order for a vehicle to qualify for Motor Trend’s prestigious award it must be a completely new or redesigned model, and it must impress Motor Trend judges when it comes to the following six key areas:
- Design Advancement
- Engineering Excellence
- Performance of Intended Function
Vehicles must also feature a starting MSRP below $100,000, and undergo rigorous testing by Motor Trend. Once a vehicle qualifies and performs well during the testing phase, it is considered a finalist for its segment category. The prestigious automotive authority then chooses a Car of the Year, Truck of the Year, SUV of the Year, and Person of the Year, before announcing it at a live award show in Los Angeles. The 2017 award show was streamed live on Motor Trend’s OnDemand service for the second year in a row. Featuring celebrity guests and industry insiders, the 2017 Motor Trend Of the Year Award Show was nothing short of incredible.
And the Winner Is…
There certainly isn’t a lack of great new cars, trucks, and SUVs for consumers to choose from in 2017. For proof of this fact, look no further than Motor Trend’s list of finalists for this year’s ‘Of The Year’ awards. The Car of the Year finalist list featured nine contenders, ranging from the Tesla Model S, Chrysler Pacifica, Audi A4, Chevrolet Bolt, and more. Beginning in early September of this year, Motor Trend took over the Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave desert in order to test out this competitive herd of new and redesigned cars. From real-world loops, winding desert roads, and other rigorous proving grounds, the panel of judges choose one finalist most worthy of being named ‘Car of the Year.’ It’s a title that every vehicle manufacturer strives to earn, and earn it they must. The 2017 Car of the Year Award went to a vehicle that Chevy dealers in Dayton Ohio and across the rest of the United States are eager to see in person – the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt.
The 2017 Chevy Bolt is only the second all-electric car ever chosen for Motor Trend’s Car of the Year Award, and it is easy to see why. Beating out the highest regarded name in alternative energy propulsion, the Chevy Bolt had no problem kicking the luxury Tesla Model S to the curb. The brand new all-electric Bolt hasn’t even arrived at Chevy dealers yet, but its EPA-estimated 238 mile range, affordable price, and incredible performance was enough to convince Motor Trend that it is the Car of the Year. After applying the maximum amount of government incentives available for electric car buyers, the 2017 Chevy Bolt will end up costing less than $30,000 to own. Requiring no gasoline for propulsion, the Chevy Bolt is poised to save drivers hundreds to thousands of dollars each year in fuel savings, an obvious benefit for the modern car shopper.
Aside from its incredible range and accessible price point, the 2017 Chevy Bolt impressed Motor Trend judges on a level they did not expect. According to a statement issued by the panel of expert judges who witnessed the 2017 Bolt in action, the electric car was the obvious winner for various reasons. Judges found, “the most impressive thing about the Bolt EV is that there are no caveats and no ‘for an electric car’ qualifiers needed in any discussion. It is, simply, a world-class small car, and that’s before you factor in the benefits inherent in the smoothness, silence, and instant-on torque provided by the electric motor.” Furthermore, the 2017 Chevy Bolt was called a “roomy, practical, quiet, and comfortable compact hatchback; an energy-efficient small car; and a benchmark electric vehicle—all in one.” While other all-electric options like the Tesla Model S rely heavily on the premium luxury market with a price tag to match, Chevrolet has managed to create an economical option for the everyday driver who wants to save money at the pump, and decrease his or her carbon footprint.
In other ‘Of The Year’ categories from this year’s show, Motor Trend named the 2017 Ford Super Duty pickup as its Truck of the Year, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC as its SUV of the Year, and the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, as its Person of the Year. The upcoming calendar year will be nothing short of exciting for the automotive industry, and the list of incredible vehicles that made it into Motor Trend’s ring of finalists is the absolute proof.
