All About the Blazer

In case you’re not familiar with the friendly little midsize SUV of today, Chevy has been making the best-selling Blazer since 1969. Originally called the K5 Blazer, the full-size SUV was designed to compete with other big names like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Cherokee. The Blazer was noticeably larger than its competition, thanks to the pick-up truck frame. The roomy interior could hold up to five passengers, perfect for an active family. The original Blazer came as a 4x4 with three different engine choices that included a 4.1L as the base engine, as well as a 5.0L V8 and a 5.7L V8. Drivers also got the choice of manual available in a three or four-speed, or a three-speed automatic transmission. The following year in 1970, a two-wheel version was made available with a 4.8L engine option.

Following a few updates and refreshes, Chevy debuted the second generation of Blazers in 1973. Due to safety regulations, this generation said goodbye to the fully removable top, which would be replaced by a half-cab design. Other changes included a smaller steering wheel, plus a longer wheelbase and wider interior. By 1976 Chevy rolled out the Blazer Chalet, which was essentially a pop-up camper. The Chalet slept two adults and included a sink, propane burner, icebox, and table. More deluxe versions slept two additional adults and included extras like a fridge. This generation saw the Blazer receive several engine updates that included a diesel option, design refreshes both to the body and interior, plus a new standard rear-wheel anti-lock brake system. The K5 Blazer was discontinued in 1991, but there was already a different Blazer model to continue on.

Chevy released the s-10 Blazer in 1983. This was when the SUV market was starting to gain major popularity. Chevy redesigned the Blazer to fit the era with a non-convertible steel top roof, two-door body style, and smaller dimensions. This version of the Blazer was a hit, and the first generation lasted until 1994, past the ending of the K-5 Blazer.

A second generation of the S-10 came out in 1995, when Chevy shuffled its lineup around, with the larger Tahoe taking over as Chevy’s full-size SUV and the Blazer being downgraded to its smaller SUV. But small didn’t mean cramped. The newly designed Blazer offered ample head and leg room plus a sleeker exterior that proved popular with families. Despite the move to try and capture more consumers with the newer design, the Blazer faded into obscurity and was discontinued in 2005.

However, this was not the end of the story for this Chevy nameplate. The Blazer name was resurrected in 2019 as a midsize crossover model. The five-passenger SUV crossover delivered a spacious, comfortable cabin with all the modern tech and driver assist features the market demanded. This is the Blazer that most of us will be familiar with today. So while the modern Blazer doesn't really have much in common with its 4x4 older sibling, the K5, it still proves to be a popular go-to crossover with families looking for a fun and sporty ride that’s always up for an adventure.

We Have CPO Blazers for Those Who Like Extra Benefits

If you want a like-new vehicle without the like-new price tag, then a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) model might be just what you’re looking for. Certified Pre-Owned means that your vehicle has been lightly used and has limited mileage on it. CPO models must be from within the last six model years and have less than 75,000 miles on the odometer. This allows drivers to get their hands on the latest tech features without hurting their wallets.

What else is great about a CPO Blazer? They come with the manufacturer's back warranties that give you the extra assurance you want when buying a light-used vehicle. These warranties include a six-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty and a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. Pick up a CPO Blazer and drive with confidence, knowing Chevy has your back.
