Higher trim levels come with a version of this engine tuned to deliver enhanced performance with 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, which is definitely better but still well below the Colorado’s sole engine. The best the Tacoma can do for towing is up to 6,500 lbs; that is more than 1,000 lbs less than the Colorado and enough of a difference to impact what you can do with your truck.
Off-Roading
Although not everyone is looking for a truck to take off-road, midsize trucks like the Chevy Colorado are among the best off-roading vehicles out there. Their smaller design makes them easier to maneuver on the trail, which can make a big difference if you are trying to tackle challenging terrain and need to fit through some tight spots. Chevy and Toyota both clearly understand this because they have dedicated off-road trims available, designed to provide impressive performance and capabilities on the trail—and while the TRD trims of the Tacoma are pretty good, they cannot compete with what Chevy has to offer.
Looking at the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, which is the most advanced option for hitting the trail in the Tacoma, we find part-time four-wheel drive (4×4) with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case. This trim has an off-road suspension with FOX shocks that include a one-inch front and half-inch rear lift. It has Multi-Terrain Select with Crawl Control, which is a nice feature for heading off-road, as well as a TRD performance cold air intake, 18-inch TRD Pro wheels, and 33-inch tires. Overall, this is a solid choice for heading off-road, but there are a number of things Chevy does better.
For starters, Chevy gives you four impressive off-road options, starting with the Trail Boss, which features a two-inch factory-install lift for remarkable ground clearance and ride height. The Trail Boss comes with 18-inch wheels wrapped in 32-inch all-terrain tires, along with 4×4 engineering featuring an Autotrac two-speed transfer case and an automatic locking rear differential. If you want to take things further, there’s the Z71 trim, but the top-tier ZR2 trim doubles down on it, with a three-inch factory lift on its performance-oriented suspension featuring DSSV Multimatic dampers, full-locking front and rear differentials, and an off-road fascia. To take things to the next level, the ZR2 Bison Edition has a best-in-class ground clearance of 12.2 inches, with 35-inch OD MT tires and five boron steel skid plates to protect its underside.
Interior
Since most of your time with your truck will be spent with you driving it, you always want to check out the features and technology found in its cabin. Looking at the standard features of the Toyota Tacoma SR (its starting trim), it has some good ones, like fabric-trimmed seating with a six-way driver’s seat, plus a Smart Key System with Push Button Start. The standard eight-inch Toyota Multimedia screen is one of its biggest weaknesses, while a four-speaker sound system is standard for the two-passenger XtraCab. There are a number of upgrades on higher trims, as you would expect, but the standard features could be better.
Looking at the Chevy Colorado and its standard WT trim, we see a number of superior features. For starters, a much larger 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with Google Built-In is standard, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability along with a six-speaker sound system. You get comfortable cloth seating with a six-way driver’s seat, a steering wheel with mounted audio and phone controls, and an 11-inch Driver Information Center, all standard. Going with a higher trim like the Z71 gets you upgrades like luxurious Evotex seating, with an eight-way power driver’s seat and more features available.
