The Colorado starts off incredibly strong since it has Chevy’s remarkable TurboMax engine as its standard offering. Ford makes several engines available for the Ranger, but we do not find any of them as compelling as what the Colorado gets standard. The result is a fantastic driving experience with Chevy’s truck, along with a greater maximum towing capacity.
Looking inside these two trucks, the 2026 Ranger certainly has a lot to offer, but Chevy gives you more in numerous ways. For example, the 2026 Colorado starts with a larger infotainment display, making it easy to enjoy all of the tech features Chevy offers. The fact that you get all of this at a lower starting price, too, makes the Colorado a midsize truck that’s hard to beat.
Performance
One of the most important things to look at in a truck is the engine and the kind of power that you get from it. This is true even with midsize pickups like these two models; the last thing you want is a truck that feels weak or like it struggles as you drive. Chevy understands this well, and it has engineered the 2026 Colorado to be an amazing choice, even better than the 2026 Ford Ranger.
Engine Options
The engines are the perfect place to start with these two trucks because they tell us a lot about what each of them has to offer. You have one powertrain available for the Colorado, which keeps things nice and simple. Ford offers three engines for the Ranger, which is not only needlessly complicated, but also means their drivers do not have a single choice to match the Colorado.
There is no doubt that Ford knows how to make powerful engines, but we feel it really misses the mark with what the 2026 Ranger has to offer. The three engines available and their levels of performance are:
- 2.3L turbocharged I-4: 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque
- 2.7L turbocharged V6: 315 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque
- 3.0L turbocharged V6: 405 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque
That 3.0L V6 is pretty good, but it is far from the kind of performance its standard engine provides. Also, that V6 is only offered with the off-road-focused Raptor variant. So anyone not looking at the high-priced Raptor will end up missing out.
Every 2026 Colorado comes with a 2.7L TurboMax engine that delivers 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. You can see that it far surpasses the standard engine of the Ranger, with greater torque than even Ford’s available 2.7L V6. Only the Ranger Raptor’s engine can match the torque that comes standard on the Colorado, at a price that is close to double the starting cost of Chevy’s truck.
Special Features
Both of these trucks have impressive engineering, although we find what Chevy provides to be more interesting, especially the exciting off-road options. Rear-wheel drive is standard on both pickups, with four-wheel drive (4×4) available. The standard Colorado trim comes with 17-inch wheels, four-wheel antilock brakes, and a fully boxed frame for rugged capabilities.
Looking at off-road options, the Ranger Raptor is undeniably impressive with its 2.5-inch FOX Racing Shocks, Watts-link rear suspension, and powerful V6 engine. It is certainly a truck built to handle the great outdoors in an impressive way. Of course, since it starts at more than $57,000 MSRP, we would hope that it has incredible features to try to justify such a massive cost.
With the 2026 Colorado, you have a couple of terrific off-road options, starting with the Trail Boss trim that features an off-road suspension with a two-inch lift, at just over $40,000 MSRP. If you want more, then the ZR2 gives you a three-inch factory lift, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and 33-inch tires at just over $50,000 MSRP; that is much less than the Ranger Raptor.
Capabilities
As much as we value raw performance from a truck, we know that you need more than that. The way the power of a truck’s engine translates into real towing capabilities is incredibly important, even with midsize trucks like these. Chevy delivers superior towing stats and impressive payload figures that can help you tackle a wide range of tasks each day.
Maximum Towing
Starting with towing, we see that the 2026 Colorado comes out strong and stays on top compared to the 2026 Ford Ranger. It’s important to remember that the Ranger has three engines, so we will see three different capability levels from it. Also, remember that the configuration and options you choose can all impact towing strength, so keep that in mind as you shop.
Let’s start with the Ford Ranger, since its three engines mean we have more numbers we need to keep track of. When properly equipped, these engines offer:
- 2.3L I-4: 7,500 lbs max towing
- 2.7L V6: 7,500 lbs max towing
- 3.0L V6: 5,510 lbs max towing
You can see that the two main engines for the 2026 Ranger are clearly intended to help folks get some work done. Even though we saw that the Raptor variant’s V6 engine has big horsepower and torque numbers, it ultimately falls short when it comes to actual muscle.
By comparison, the 2026 Colorado with its TurboMax engine can handle up to 7,700 lbs of towing. That is notably superior to the Ranger with any of its engines, especially the powerful V6 in the Ranger Raptor. Hence, you can choose any Colorado trim that you like the looks of, pick the right features and options, and get a truck that can take care of what you need better than any Ford Ranger.
Payload Potential
Hauling a trailer, camper, or boat behind you is not the only important thing a truck can take care of. For a lot of us, the weight we can load into our pickup’s bed is also a big consideration when shopping. We will give the Ford Ranger credit here, as it manages a greater maximum payload, but only with one engine; its other two engines come up short, as you will see. Both of these screens look fantastic and make it easy to use different apps and keep track of important information as you drive. Looking at the 2026 Ranger and its starting XL trim, we find a 10-inch touchscreen display and an eight-inch driver display. Both of these screens are smaller than what Chevy gives you, which can make a big difference.
Convenience Features
As you enjoy your truck, you want features that make it easier to do your job or take care of other things. The 2026 Ranger has some nice convenience features on offer, like a remote keyless entry system with a remote tailgate lock. Available options on high-end trims can include a Pro Power Onboard system to power tools and appliances, but that is an optional upgrade.
The 2026 Colorado is fantastic for a variety of situations, with bed and tailgate options that enhance your time with your truck. Up to 17 tie-downs are available, making it easy to secure cargo in the Colorado’s bed, along with a StowFlex tailgate that adds storage inside the gate.
