In the battle of electric vehicles, every major auto manufacturer wants to stand at the top of the podium for having the best electric vehicle on the market. One company that has gone over and beyond to grab headlines and attention is General Motors, especially with the all-new 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV. There has been nonstop talk about the new electric utility vehicle, which has led a lot of people to compare it to some of the other electric and hybrid vehicles on the market, such as the latest Kia Niro EV. If you have been wondering how the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV vs 2020 Kia Niro EV stack up against one another, we have a detailed breakdown of the information, tech specs, and performance ratings of both vehicles.

The 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV has three different trims, including the LT, the Premier, and the special Launch Edition. The different trims offer slightly different features, including GM's Super Cruise hands-free driving system, which enables the Bolt EUV to taxi drivers along more than 200,000 miles of road across North America. The 2020 Kia Niro EV is available in just two different trims, the EX and the EX Premium, and also lacks many of the standard and optional features found on the new Chevy Bolt EUV.

  • Performance

A silver 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV is driving alone on a highway after winning the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV vs 2020 Kia Niro EV comparison.

Electric vehicles are powered quite differently than traditional gasoline vehicles, and you may be surprised by just how much power and acceleration they offer. Both the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV and 2020 Kia Niro EV are powered by electric motors and lithium-ion battery packs driving the front wheels. They also put out similar performance numbers, boasting around 200 hp and well over 250 lb-ft of torque. Combined with the instant power delivered by electric motors, these two eco-friendly family cars are remarkably quick.

    Batteries and Range

Perhaps the top questions about any EV are: "how far can it go before needing to recharge?" and "how difficult is recharging?" You might be surprised just how easy owning an EV is, but there are some differences between the Bolt EUV and Niro EV. Despite having similar performance numbers, Chevy has made driving an EV easier than ever with faster charging times and longer range. Further, even though the Bolt EUV is newer than the Niro EV, Chevy made use of the proven Bolt EV platform when designing their new electric SUV.

The 2022 Bolt EUV is fitted with a 65 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, while the 2020 Kia Niro EV has a slightly smaller 64 kWh battery pack. When combined with the lighter weight of the Chevy, this means that the Bolt EUV has a range of 250 miles on a single charge against 239 miles for the Niro EV. An 11-mile difference in range isn't huge, but it does give you a bit more leeway and helps stave off range anxiety. However, the range is only the beginning.

    Charging Times

There are three different ways to charge an EV, known as Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Level 1 charging is just a fancy name for plugging the car into your standard 120-volt household power outlet. This is very convenient since it means you can charge anywhere, but very slow. The most common form of charging is Level 2, which can be done at home using a 240-volt power outlet.

With a Level 2 charger, the 2020 Kia Niro EV takes over 9.5 hours to recharge from 0 to 100%. In comparison, the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV can go from 0 to 100% in just 7 hours despite having a larger battery and longer range. This massive difference in charge times is the product of Chevy's considerably more advanced battery technology and means you will spend less time charging and more time driving in a Bolt EUV.

  • Technology

The biggest selling point for a lot of the newer electric vehicles is the technology, whether it's the advanced electric powertrain itself or all new features like advanced hands-free driving. Both the 2020 Kia Niro EV and 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV come with a dynamic suite of impressive tech, but the Chevy edges out over the other in a big way thanks to some impressive tech advancements.

    A Step Closer to Self-Driving

The Kia Niro EV comes standard with the Kia Drive Wise assist suite, which includes Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go standard. That feature works in conjunction with Lane Following Assist to provide a near self-driving experience, with the Niro EV automatically centering itself in its lane when both features are activated. However, the Chevy Bolt EUV has a true hands-free self-driving experience thanks to Super Cruise. Originally developed for luxury Cadillac models, Super Cruise allows you to take your hands off the wheel and relax when driving along over 200,000 miles of LIDAR-mapped highways across North America.

The beautiful part about the Super Cruise Control is that by utilizing real-time positioning through sensors and the camera system, the vehicle can guide drivers and passengers around every turn, bend, and straightaway, so you have a hands-free experience when traveling around and about in the Chevy Bolt EUV. For those of you who prefer having hands-on control of your vehicle, the ability to change the drive modes with the Bolt EUV means you can opt for speedy, instant acceleration and sharp handling, or you can enjoy the ride with a more relaxed experience thanks to features like one-pedal driving.

    Driving an EV

One-pedal driving allows drivers to travel about with just the accelerator. When you lift off the accelerator pedal, the electric motors are used to apply braking force, recapturing energy that would have otherwise been lost. If you want your Bolt EUV to drive more like a normal car, you can turn off one-pedal driving. However, you can still slow down the car using the electric motors by holding down the Regen On Demand paddle on the steering wheel. This allows the Bolt EUV to recapture battery power through regenerative braking, giving you extra range without using one-pedal driving. Super Cruise Control alone is a breakthrough for the Bolt EUV, and all these features certainly put it in another league technologically compared to the Kia Niro.

  • Interior

The rear seats in a 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV are shown from the side.

The interior of the 2021 Kia Niro features standard equipment such as a telescoping steering column and a 7-inch LCD screen in the instrument cluster. USB power outlets and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls also come standard across all trims. Only the EX Premium trim allows for wireless phone charging, though. The Bolt EUV comes with a more robust set of features, including a high-resolution fully digital instrument cluster and wireless device charging on all trims.

    Infotainment

In the Kia Niro EV, you can access vehicle information, apps, and media through a standard 8-inch color touchscreen display. Although upper trims come with a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, every single trim of the Chevy Bolt EUV comes standard with a 10.2-inch touchscreen. And while the Kia does come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless smartphone integration, Chevy one-ups them with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. When combined with the wireless charging pad, that means never again worrying about plugging your phone in when you are in the Bolt EUV.

    Interior Space

As for dimensions, the Niro EV features up to 53.0 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seat folded, which is actually slightly less space than the Niro Hybrid. In comparison, the 2022 Bolt EUV offers 56.9 cubic feet for cargo, making it the more practical choice. This difference in cargo space is particularly bad given that the Niro EV is actually larger than the Bolt EUV in every dimension other than height, further demonstrating the advantage of a purpose-designed EV rather than a hybrid that had the gasoline engine replaced with more batteries.

It is a similar story when it comes to passenger space, with the more compact Chevy model offering an impressive 39.1 inches of rear legroom and 44.3 inches of front legroom. The Niro EV simply can't compare, with only 36.0 inches of rear legroom and 41.7 inches of front legroom. If you are looking for a new family vehicle, the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV is the clear choice with its significant advantages in interior space.
