When you think about the best midsize trucks in the industry, chances are you think of the Chevy Colorado and Ford Ranger list, especially since they are known to be able to handle virtually anything tossed their way. So when it comes to comparing the 2025 Chevy Colorado vs 2025 Ford Ranger, are you wondering how you're ever going to be able to choose between the two?

The Colorado is a superstar on the streets, the job site, the trails, and anywhere else it dares to travel, recognized for its unbelievable versatility, durability, and strength. It's a talented off-roader, a dutiful everyday traveler, and when flexing its muscles, this Chevy favorite doesn't back down. The Ranger is a fan favorite, recently making its re-emergence onto the scene for the 2019 model year. It packs a punch as well, exhibiting tremendous capabilities, a fierce design, and an engaging ride quality that allows drivers to sink into the ride effortlessly.

For 2025, the Colorado adopts a simplified approach to its powertrain, opting for a turbocharged four-cylinder across the board. A new sliding rear window and fresh colors join the list of design features, while its ZR2 trim gets decked out with perforated leather appointments, a heated steering wheel, and more alluring elements. Unfortunately, the Ranger remains largely unchanged for the 2025 model year, hot off the heels of a redesign in 2024. Here at McCluskey Chevrolet, we want to get to the bottom of what each midsize truck can add to the driving experience, hoping to clear up what each of these trucks has to offer.

  • PERFORMANCE

    Top-Level Powertrains

There's no doubt about it: the 2025 Chevy Colorado and the 2025 Ford Ranger are at the top of the food chain as far as midsize trucks are concerned. For its latest year on the streets, the Colorado has only one engine option under its perfectly chiseled hood for the entire trim lineup: a 2.7L TurboMax turbocharged four-cylinder, which makes 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque.

This powerful engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, making for a compelling ride quality, no matter where you choose to travel. Multiple drive modes are at the ready to help you over any terrain. When you wish to get out and explore some unruly environments, you'll want the ZR2 trim by your side; from Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers to a high-performance suspension and five dedicated drive modes, the Colorado ZR2 is an absolute force on the trails.

There's a variety of powertrains to choose from with the Ranger, which can be a bit overwhelming. It comes standard with a 2.3L EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder, which makes 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. As you can see, this is much less exciting than what's offered in the Colorado. There are a couple of V6 options on the menu to intensify the experience if you're willing to pay to upgrade.

It's been reported that the Ranger could use more responsiveness when it comes to steering; however, overall, its ride is comfortable and agile. Of course, the Ranger is also highly talented when the ground gets gritty, with off-road-oriented trims offering features like FOX Racing shocks, locking front and rear axles, and more adventurous elements.

    Exceptional Capabilities

Not only can the Colorado hold its own when the environment turns treacherous, but it's also a skilled workmate, offering exceptional power to your everyday tasks on the job site and beyond. Its standard turbocharged four-cylinder is able to offer a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 lbs, which is the highest rating in its segment. To make towing even easier, the Colorado also offers trailering help in the form of a dedicated trailering app, trailer safety features, and multiple camera views to help you maneuver your haul, no matter where the journey takes you.

The Ranger is able to take on a maximum of 7,500 lbs with its standard four-cylinder and its 2.7L V6 option. Those who wish to upgrade to the Raptor variant vastly limit their towing potential to a maximum of 5,510 lbs. Even the Colorado's off-roader, the ZR2, can tow more than that, with a 6,000-lb towing capacity. It's clear that the Colorado offers better capabilities and an overall better performance, whether you're rolling down the highway or coasting over obstacles in the woods.

  • DESIGN

    Exterior Versatility

Midsize trucks are outstanding for many drivers due to the fact that they're a bit easier to handle than their full-size counterparts, and they're just as handsomely styled. What's more is that they're incredibly functional with handy features to make tasks easier. Not only does the 2025 Chevy Colorado showcase best-in-class bed and tailgate functionality, but it also holds the honor of best-in-class ground clearance, making this truck one of the most versatile around, no matter how you plan to utilize it.

Its mid-position tailgate allows you to close it halfway while supporting up to 500 lbs of cargo—and with up to 17 available tie-downs, a built-in 120-volt power outlet, and an abundance of places to stow your gear, the Colorado is the pinnacle of functionality. For those who seek to head off the beaten path, rest assured that this capable truck has the design features to maximize your expedition. You can expect class-leading ground clearance of 12.2 inches, as well as five boron steel skid plates and 35-inch mud-terrain tires—the largest in its class—when you choose the ZR2 Bison variant.

You won't find all of these nifty features in the 2025 Ford Ranger, but it does offer an available step to access your bed from the side, as well as an in-bed power outlet to power tools and other equipment on the go.

    Cabin Experience

Both the Colorado and the Ranger offer an array of trims to drivers, making it easy to find the right model to suit your lifestyle and budget. Although the Colorado is geared toward performance and adventure in many of its trims, its top-level options offer features like perforated leather upholstery, ventilated seats, and exciting accents to intensify your experience on board.

Like the Colorado, the Ranger is exceptionally modern, with contemporary touches throughout. Top-of-the-line trims, like the Lariat, offer the most luxurious features, including leather-trimmed front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Raptor variant lies at the very top of the list, offering off-road-ready components and durable design features; however, its price tag is significantly higher than the Colorado's off-road trim, the ZR2: the Raptor starts at almost $56k, while the ZR2 comes in under $50k.

  • TECHNOLOGY

    Interior Amenities

Pickup trucks these days are loaded with innovative tech to make tasks easier and any journey better, which is exactly what you can expect from the 2025 Chevy Colorado and the 2025 Ford Ranger. The Colorado comes standard with an 11.3-inch touchscreen, providing you with all the apps and tech you need to enjoy your ride. A segment-first 11-inch fully digital Driver Information Center occupies a spot behind the steering wheel and showcases information about your drive, like speed, safety alerts, and more. Available wireless charging helps keep your cabin free from wires, while standard wireless smartphone integration helps you remain connected to your device effortlessly and your cabin clutter-free.

The Ranger comes standard with a 10-inch touchscreen display, while a 12-inch option is available on the more expensive trims. Like pretty much every other truck on the market, you'll find wireless smartphone tech, navigation, and an intuitive software system. In the end, if you want to get more standard tech for less, the Colorado is the better choice here.

    Camera Array

Perhaps what really sets the Colorado apart from its rivals is the fact that it offers some of the best camera tech in the industry. With segment-first available underbody cameras, you'll be able to see underneath your vehicle, which is especially helpful while you're traversing uninviting terrain. With ten available camera views, the Colorado provides you with a complete picture of what resides around your vehicle so that you're prepared to navigate wherever the road or trail takes you next.

There's an available 360-degree camera system in the Ranger; however, this just provides you with a bird's-eye view around your vehicle, which vastly limits you while you're out exploring in the woods. If you want to take advantage of some of the most advanced and groundbreaking camera tech in the industry, you'll find it inside the 2025 Colorado.
