  • Overview

A silver 2014 Nissan Maxima S is angled left.

If you’re looking for a used Nissan Maxima for sale, it’s possible that you’re already feeling a bit overwhelmed with what you’re finding in terms of material on the Internet. This is a model that’s been available for more than 30 years, so simply typing, “used Nissan Maxima” into a search bar likely led you in several different directions. While it’s good that you’re looking for a vehicle that’s popular, as that’ll make it easier to maintain and manage with available parts, it can be difficult to pinpoint what you’re looking for with specificity.

A lot of buyers out there are looking for a model from a particular year, as that tends to indicate the mileage that they’ll generally find on these vehicles. We’re going to break down the years 2009 – 2015 below to help kick start your search for a used Nissan Maxima in terms of efficiency and, hopefully, results. One thing is certain: You are searching for a vehicle that’s going to serve you well. A used Nissan Maxima is a solid investment to say the least, and it’s one that should serve you and yours well for the long haul.

  • 2009

A blue 2009 used Nissan Maxima is shown in front of desert rocks.

The Nissan Maxima has long been known as the “4-door sports car,” and that’s because it combines the performance and handling of high-performance models with the size, comfort and style of a rock-solid sedan. The car was a hit with consumers as well, as it sold over 53,000 models to buyers across the United States when it was initially offered. Simply put, this is a car that not only moves, but it also offers an extremely roomy and comfortable ride for up to five passengers. That’s why it’s known as a vehicle that offers the best of both worlds. Specifically, the 2009 Nissan Maxima provides the following to its drivers and passengers:

    • 19 miles per gallon in the city
    • 126 miles per gallon on the highway
    • 13.5-liter, V-6 engine
    • 1Continuous variable transmission
    • 1Up to 290 horsepower

Looking at these specs, it’s clear that this is a performance vehicle that also brings a lot of power and consistency. That’s why it’s remained one of the best-selling pre-owned vehicles offered by the manufacturer. You won’t go wrong if you find a used Nissan Maxima for sale and you take advantage of the opportunity, particularly if it’s been maintained properly and it has a relatively low number of miles.

  • 2010

The black interior of a 2010 used Nissan Maxima is shown.

Given the success of the 2009 Maxima, the company didn’t see much reason to make any drastic changes to its 2010 model. It still offered what were basically identical performance capabilities and size particulars, and it was still known as a sedan that could and did perform in many ways like a much smaller sports car. If you close your eyes and get behind the wheel of a 2009 Nissan Maxima and then climb into the cabin of the 2010 model, it’s likely that you won’t be able to tell the difference immediately, which makes sense given its popularity.

Most of the changes detailed by Nissan were slight or basically cosmetic in nature. The following details changed with the 2010 model as compared to the previous year:

    • New wheel finishes for 18-inch (fine silver) and 19-inch (hyper silver) wheels
    • iPod® connectivity is changed to USB connectivity
    • XM Satellite Radio becomes standard on Maxima 3.5 SV
    • Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System is now standard on 3.5 S and SV
    • 7-inch color monitor, RearView Monitor, auxiliary audio/video input jack, iPod net and 2GB Music Server added to new Monitor Package
    • DVD playback capability, Bluetooth Streaming Audio and XM NavWeather added to Technology Package
    • Two new exterior colors added – Crimson Black and Ocean Gray

Overall, the 2010 model offered the typical changes in wheel finishes and exterior colors, but the biggest change seems to have been its incorporation of developing technology into its standard offerings. That’s quite common with any successful vehicle.

  • 2011

A silver 2011 used Nissan Maxima is shown from the front in close up.

There’s an old saying that applies to just about every context imaginable, and that includes the automotive market: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That seemed to be the idea once again behind the 2011 Nissan Maxima, as it continued to be marketed and successfully sold as the 4-door sports car. Very little changed with the 2011 model as compared to the previous year, and that’s not an accident. The company continued to offer what people liked.

Continuing the progression, the changes that were present in the 2011 Maxima were largely aesthetic in nature, along with a new grille on some models. According to Nissan, these were the specific differences between the 2011 and 2010 models:

    • New dark chrome grille and smoked headlights (Sport models)
    • New rolled edge tailpipe finisher
    • New metallic finish for center stack, console, automatic transmission finisher, and door pulls (Sport models)
    • Unique shiny gray interior stitching (Sport models)
    • Three new exterior colors: Metallic Slate, Brilliant Silver and Pearl White

Other than the tailpipe finisher, every change made this year was related to color schemes of some sort.

  • 2012

A blue 2012 used Nissan Maxima is shown in front of a public building with columns.

For the first time in a few years, the 2012 Nissan Maxima looked a bit different from its immediate predecessor. It continued to provide the same performance, comfort and style, but its exterior went through a bit of a makeover. Specifically, the 2012 Maxima differed from the previous model in that it offered:

    • A new front grille design
    • New rear combination lights
    • New 18-inch and 19-inch aluminum alloy wheel designs
    • A new, white, interior meter cluster illumination color
    • New Dark Piano-hairline trim
    • New Atlantic Cherry wood tone trim
    • New Beige interior color
    • New audio segment display
    • New audio/HVAC knob design

The 2012 model also offered a new Limited Edition Package, which, according to Nissan, included the following:

    • Smoked appearance headlights
    • High Intensity Discharge (HID) Xenon headlights
    • A compass in the rearview mirror
    • 18-inch aluminum-alloy Dark Hyper Silver colored wheels
    • Rear spoiler
    • Dark satin chrome front grille
    • Fog lights
    • Illuminated kick plates
    • Outside mirrors with integrated turn signals
    • Metallic trim on the center cluster, center console and door armrest grips

If you find a 2012 used Nissan for sale, you will likely notice the difference between its look and feel from previous years.

  • 2013

A black 2013 used Nissan Maxima is navigating a busy city intersection.

The look, feel and specs of the Nissan Maxima continued to be extremely consistent in 2013. Very few changes were made from the previous year’s model, and again, that’s because the Maxima continued to be a very successful vehicle, purchased by tens of thousands of people across the country. Its sales appeared to be as consistent as its look and performance details. Some of the larger updates were as follows:

    • New SV Value Package added, featuring 9-speaker Bose audio system, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, heated outside mirrors
    • Bose Audio Package added, with 9-speaker Bose audio system and SiriusXM Satellite Radio
    • Sport Package adds Monitor Package content (7-inch color monitor, USB connectivity, iPod net in center console, RearView Monitor), plus climate-controlled driver's seat and Dark Hyper Silver wheel finish (19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels)
    • Revised exterior color selection with Pearl White added (eight colors total)

Nearly every change involved technology advancements and new colors, along with a new package offering. Otherwise, Nissan stayed the course with the 2013 model. That means that if you’re looking for a used Nissan Maxima from this year, you’re getting almost the same vehicle as was offered previously.

  • 2014

A white 2014 used Nissan Maxima is shown on a rainy highway.

If you’re starting to sense a trend, you’re not alone, as most people over the years came to recognize the Maxima for its look because it rarely changed during these years. 2014 was no different, as only a handful of changes were made to the model. They included:

    • Addition of a new S Value Package with smoked appearance headlights, HID Xenon headlights, compass in rearview mirror, 18-inch aluminum-alloy Dark Hyper Silver wheels, rear spoiler, fog lights, outside mirrors with integrated turn signals and metallic trim treatment
    • Previous Monitor and HID Xenon Packages no longer available
    • Standard RearView Monitor, USB connectivity and 7.0-inch color monitor with QVGA display added to SV grade
    • Two new exterior colors: Gun Metallic (replaces Dark Gray) and Midnight Garnet (replaces Tuscan Sun); eight available exterior colors total
  • 2015

A white 2015 used Nissan Maxima is shown against a black backdrop.

If you’ve noticed, the amount of space needed to describe the changes in the Nissan Maxima models offered has gotten progressively smaller. That’s because the changes on a year-to-year basis became progressively fewer. We’ve reached the point now where there were basically no changes between the 2014 and 2015 models. In fact, the company called the 2015 Maxima part of an “extended model year” because there were basically no adjustments to the design, engine capabilities or anything else. A used Nissan Maxima in 2015 is basically the same vehicle as a used Nissan Maxima for sale from the 2014 model year.
