This means you have plenty of great options to choose from, but it can also make it difficult to narrow down your options and pick exactly the right one with everything you need. It often helps to focus on two models and compare them to see how well they can meet your needs and deliver the kind of power you want. Looking at the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 vs 2022 Ram 1500, for example, we can see that while the Ram truck has a lot to offer, it simply falls short of what you get with Chevy’s legendary pickup.
Looking at the engines as a great place to start, we find that both of these trucks have four engines available, including a diesel option, which gives you the freedom to get the right amount of power for what you are looking for. The engine options for the Silverado 1500 this year are far superior to what you can get with the Ram pickup; for example, the starting engine of the Silverado delivers 430 lb-ft of torque, while Ram’s starting engine only offers 269 lb-ft of torque. These differences continue throughout the full selection of engines available on these trucks, with the top Chevy option giving you far greater horsepower and torque than the best Ram standard gas engine.
Not only does the greater power of Chevy’s engines make the Silverado 1500 more enjoyable to drive, but they also let you get more work done. The standard engine on the Silverado gives you much greater towing capacity than the Ram 1500 with its starting engine. Looking at the most-powerful gas engines on both models, when properly equipped for optimal towing, the Silverado tops out at 13,300 lbs, while the Ram pickup can only handle up to 12,750 lbs of towing. Once you combine this superior performance and capability with impressive new interior options for the Silverado 1500 that surpass what Ram offers, the Chevy pickup becomes the clear choice.

Although it looks like the Ram 1500 has four engines available, two of them are different versions of one engine. The Ram starts with a 3.6L Pentastar V6 with eTorque, which delivers 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. Then there is an available 5.7L HEMI V8 engine that provides 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. Ram also offers a version of this engine with their eTorque mild hybrid system – it does not deliver more power overall but boosts low-end torque that helps with towing. Finally, there is a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine available that offers 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, which is a decent choice for anyone looking for a diesel engine in a pickup.
By comparison, the 2022 Silverado 1500 has four different engines offered, rather than two versions of one, starting with a 2.7L Turbo I-4 High Output engine that delivers 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. You can see this is much more torque than Ram’s starting engine – there is also an available 5.3L V8 engine that offers 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, which is a great middle-of-the-road engine in terms of power. If you need incredible performance, then there is an available 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engine that delivers a massive 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque for a great driving experience. Finally, you can choose a 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel I-6 engine with 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, which is an amazing choice if you prefer diesel performance.
One of the biggest reasons that a lot of people choose a full-size truck is for the ability to haul a lot of weight behind you. Both of these pickups have an impressive towing capacity, which is no surprise, and yet the Chevy Silverado is superior both in terms of standard and maximum towing capacity. Keep in mind when shopping for a truck that different options will impact how much a truck can tow, so look at the specs on any specific model you are interested in before you purchase to ensure it can handle what you need.
The 2022 Ram 1500, with its standard 3.6L V6 engine, can handle up to 7,730 lbs of towing capacity when properly equipped for it. This is not bad, necessarily, but we will see just how much better the Chevy Silverado can handle towing with its standard engine. Looking at the most-powerful gas engine for the Ram 1500, it can handle up to 12,750 lbs of towing, while the available diesel engine lets the Ram pickup pull just 12,560 lbs of weight behind it. These are both fine but certainly not exceptional.
If you go with the Silverado 1500 with its standard 2.7L Turbo High-Output engine, then it can handle up to 9,500 lbs of towing capacity. This is a fantastic amount of standard towing that puts most other trucks, including the Ram, to shame – it is nearly 2,000 lbs more than the Ram 1500 can manage with its standard engine. The Silverado, with its available 6.2L V8 engine, can handle up to 13,300 lbs of towing, which again surpasses the Ram 1500. Best of all, with its diesel engine, the Silverado can still manage up to 13,300 lbs of towing, making it an amazing choice no matter what kind of engine you want.
For years now, Ram pickups have reigned supreme as the best choice in terms of the sort of luxury and technology you could find in their interior. While the 2022 Ram 1500 is certainly impressive, the Chevy Silverado 1500 now surpasses it with fantastic new features. Available features inside the Ram 1500 include an updated infotainment system with a 12-inch display available, along with a 7-inch driver information digital cluster display, luxurious interior details, and an available Harman Kardon premium sound system.
