Although the battle between full-size trucks in the auto industry has been raging for decades, a new war for electrified supremacy has just begun. While strange outliers like the Tesla Cybertruck are still trying to find their place on the battlefield, the big names are taking up their positions and getting ready to show what they can do. All you have to do is look at the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV vs 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning to see where these battle lines are being drawn and how aggressively both brands are showcasing the kind of performance they can pack into an EV pickup. That being said, even though this is just the beginning, it is easy to see that Chevy has taken an early lead.

Both the Chevy Silverado EV and the F-150 Lightning are all-electric trucks that use batteries and motors to get the job done rather than a gas or diesel engine. In terms of performance, there are some significant differences between how they have been engineered. Both trucks have dual-motor configurations standard, but while the F-150 Lightning has a standard 98 kWh battery with a 131 kWh battery available, the Silverado EV comes with an incredible 200 kWh battery that utilizes the innovative Ultium battery system Chevy has developed. The result is that while the Ford truck can go an estimated 320 miles on a full charge, Chevy estimates the Silverado EV can go 450 miles.

Not only do you get much greater range from Chevy, but the Silverado EV also delivers far more power, with 754 hp and 785 lb-ft of torque compared to 580 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque from Ford. Charging is easy with both trucks, including home charging options, plus they can both handle up to 10,000 lbs of towing without ever going back to a gas station. However, Chevy takes innovation and technology further with impressive features like an automatic adaptive air suspension for enhanced performance, four-wheel steering that takes advantage of the electric design, and a massive 17-inch freeform infotainment screen that is paired with a 14-inch multi-color head-up display. By comparison, the available 15.5-inch display inside the Ford F-150 Lightning feels surprisingly small as Ford struggles to keep up with what Chevy has created.

  • Performance

    Electrified Power

Electric trucks might have certain things that set them apart from standard, gas-powered pickups, but some things are also quite similar. For example, the kind of power, performance, and capability that a truck offers is just as important regardless of whether it runs on gas or electricity. Manufacturers know this, of course, so we are seeing the first electric trucks hit the road with performance that can be quite spectacular. The Ford F-150 Lightning brings bold power everywhere it goes, but it cannot keep up with what Chevy has provided.

There are two configurations available for the 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning, though both of them feature a pair of motors: one on the front axle and one on the rear. The standard option features a 98 kWh battery and provides 452 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque; that horsepower is good, if not amazing, but that torque is the real selling point. When paired with the available 131 kWh battery instead, the F-150 Lightning gets a more impressive 580 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque. With its standard battery, this truck can tow up to 7,700 lbs of weight behind it, while the available battery boosts that up to 10,000 lbs of maximum towing capacity.

We cannot deny that the F-150 Lightning’s performance is great, but Chevy has pushed the envelope to another level altogether. For its inaugural 2024 model year, the Silverado EV has two models available: a WT trim meant for commercial customers and a First-Edition RST trim for individual drivers. Both models come with a pair of motors and a 200 kWh battery for incredible power and performance. The WT offers 510 hp and 615 lb-ft of torque, while the RST blazes ahead with an incredible 754 hp and 785 lb-ft of torque. One look is all it takes to see how much more power Chevy has packed into its electric truck, plus the RST trim provides 10,000 lbs of max towing capacity.

  • Range & Charging

    Excellent Range

One of the most important factors to consider with EVs is the kind of range they offer with their battery, motor, and overall electrical architecture. This is something Chevy has a lot of experience with, thanks to everything it learned throughout the run of the successful Bolt EV and Bolt EUV models. Building on what it had learned, Chevy developed the remarkable Ultium battery platform used across its various EV models. This has given the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV a notable advantage over most other models out there in terms of its range and battery design, including the Ford F-150 Lightning.

With its standard 98 kWh battery, the 2024 F-150 Lightning can go an estimated 240 miles from a full charge, which is fine but not great. The available 131 kWh battery improves things by providing an estimated 320 miles of range, which is more in line with what drivers are looking for as a minimum. Chevy goes well beyond the minimum, however, and its 200 kWh battery ensures the starting WT model of the 2024 Silverado EV can go an estimated 450 miles from a full charge—yes, you read that right. If you go with the stunning First-Edition RST trim, then you can get an estimated 440 miles of range from a full charge. We don’t have to tell you how impressive those ranges are because you can see the numbers for yourself.

    Charging Options

When it comes time to charge your truck, both Ford and Chevy make things easy, though once again, the Silverado EV has the edge. Both of these trucks make charging simple with support for 120-volt Level 1 and 240-volt Level 2 charging at home or other locations. You can get a home charging station installed by Chevy or Ford, which makes things simpler. Both trucks also support public DC Fast Charging, but with the Silverado EV’s support for 350 kW charging, you can add 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. This all comes together to make driving and enjoying your truck simpler and more convenient with the Chevy.

  • Technology

    Connectivity & Utility

Both of these trucks showcase cutting-edge tech from their brands, but as they do so, they also highlight why Chevy once again has the advantage. The Ford F-150 Lightning has a 15.5-inch infotainment display available, though a smaller screen is standard, along with heated and ventilated front seats, Phone as a Key functionality, and more. Ford offers its hands-free BlueCruise system for the F-150 Lightning, which is good but not our favorite version of this new technology. Ford’s Pro Power Onboard system provides outlets that let the F-150 Lightning act as a mobile power supply, while the Intelligent Backup Power system lets this truck act as an emergency generator for a house for an estimated three days.

With the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV, you get a stunning 17-inch freeform infotainment display paired with an 11-inch reconfigurable driver instrument display in the First-Edition RST model. Along with a 14-inch multi-color driver head-up display, this makes it easy to keep track of all of the information you need while driving. Chevy's impressive Super Cruise hands-free driving system is available for the Silverado EV, with Trailering support to ensure you can safely drive on more than 400,000 miles of roads across the US and Canada, even while towing. You get an automatic adaptive air suspension that can raise and lower the Silverado EV up to two inches, plus four-wheel steering that reduces its turning radius for incredible maneuverability. In an emergency, a fully-charged Silverado EV with an Energy PowerShift charger and Energy Vehicle-to-Home Enablement Kit can provide power to a home for 21 days! This is technology that is not only impressive but could truly save lives.
