January 10th, 2014 by

Seemingly out’ve nowhere, the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has become a proving ground for automakers to show off their latest and greatest technological advances to make the lives of drivers easier and exciting. Chevrolet thought it would be a good time to unveil a whole bucketload of new smartphone-like technologies for its cars. Those are the kinds of perks you won’t need a quick oil change to see. Man we love technology!

At the beginning of this week’s event, General Motors’ OnStar teamed up with AT&T to offer 4G LTE connectivity on its 2015 Corvette, Impala, Malibu and Volt models as an optional extra. It has yet to be priced, but will later be available on the Equinox, Silverado and Silverado HD, as well as on both the gas and electric versions of the Spark. Our northern neighbors in Canada will gain gain access on the Trax. There is no date yet, but it’s likely that the Cruze, Traverse, Sonic and Camaro will also see OnStar 4G LTE at a later date.

So you’re thinking: “Cool, I have internet, but there is nothing to surf through…” We take your point, and so does Chevy. That is why Chevy is announcing a new AppShop on vehicles with the MyLink system and 4G LTE. Customers will be offered a range of apps that so far include iHeartRadio, Priceline, The Weather Channel, NPR, Slacker Radio, TuneIn Radio, Cityseeker, Eventseeker, Glympse and Kaliki.

“The built-in 4G LTE connection will allow our vehicles to be updated with the latest software and apps,” said GM’s Global Connected Consumer president, Mary Chan. “This means that the driver’s vehicle infotainment systems can keep getting better after purchase as customers can continue to add on and customize their features.”
