Chevy Equinox EV vs Hyundai IONIQ 5: 6 Reasons Chevy Comes Out on Top

Compact SUVs have become incredibly popular over the last couple of decades due to their ability to deliver SUV functionality in a small size that works for more people. With Chevy making a bold move to take over the all-electric vehicle market over the last few years, it makes sense that the Equinox EV has become one of our favorite options.

Even when compared to competitors like the Hyundai IONIQ 5, the Equinox EV remains an amazing choice that you’ll love driving each day.

#1 – Terrific Performance for a Great Drive

One of the first things we look at with any vehicle—and you should too—is the kind of driving experience it offers. Even with a compact SUV, you want something you’ll enjoy driving, which often comes down to its power. Looking at the Chevy Equinox EV, there are a couple of different options for you to consider: a single-motor setup with front-wheel drive or a dual-motor option for electric all-wheel drive.

The standard single-motor configuration delivers 220 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque, which is excellent for a small vehicle like this. By comparison, the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 with its standard single-motor setup gets just 168 hp and falls well behind Chevy’s EV SUV. If you want enhanced performance, the dual-motor setup gets you 300 hp and 355 lb-ft of torque, which will get you around the city with a smile every time you hit the road.

#2 – Excellent Standard and Available Range

Power and performance aren’t the only things that matter when looking at a vehicle, especially a daily driver like a compact SUV. With an electric vehicle, you always want to consider the range that it provides, since this has a direct impact on how well it can handle what you need from it on a routine basis.

Chevy understands this well, which is why the Equinox EV has been designed to help you do everything you want to do. GM’s impressive Ultium battery system gives the Equinox EV fantastic range, even though it doesn’t have a massive battery, which helps keep costs down.

The standard Equinox EV with its single motor gets an estimated 319 miles of range from a full charge, which is about as good as anything we’ve seen in this class. For example, the standard configuration for the Hyundai IONIQ 5 gets just 245 miles of range from a full charge. That’s a tremendous difference that matters in real-world situations.

If you want the boosted performance of two motors for the Equinox EV, then you lose a bit of range, but you still get an estimated 307 miles from a full charge. That’s a minor difference for much greater power, so no matter what kind of drive appeals to you, Chevy keeps you on the road for many miles.

#3 – Gorgeous Exterior Details

Although we’d never argue that what’s on the outside matters most, you still want a vehicle that you’re proud to drive. The Equinox EV has fantastic exterior features across every trim; standard features include 19-inch wheels, LED headlamps and tail lamps, and power-adjustable side mirrors.

Suppose you go with the performance-focused RS trim. In that case, get stunning 21-inch wheels for a bold and aggressive stance, heated and power-adjustable side mirrors, and an AutoSense power rear liftgate that makes loading and unloading your SUV incredibly easy. Although 19-inch wheels are standard on the Hyundai IONIQ 5, some models have 18-inch wheels instead, and 20-inch wheels are the largest available. Hyundai’s SUV has some nice styling, but we prefer the looks of the Equinox EV overall.

#4 – Great Comfort and Convenience Features

No matter what else you’re interested in, you deserve to get an SUV you feel comfortable in and enjoy driving, which Chevy always delivers. Standard features of the 2025 Equinox EV include comfortable cloth seating, a six-way driver’s seat, and automatic climate control.

Remote Start with support for starting through the myChevrolet Mobile app is standard, along with adaptive cruise control and more. Available features include durable and comfortable Evotex seating, an eight-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar, and heated front seats for added comfort. Hyundai has some nice comfort features available for the IONIQ 5, but Chevy delivers a lot at a starting price about $9,000 less than Hyundai’s model.

#5 – Innovative Technology Inside

Along with the impressive comfort and convenience features of the Equinox EV, you also get remarkable technology that improves your time on the road. For starters, a gorgeous 17.7-inch LCD infotainment display with Google built in is standard in every Equinox EV, even the starting trim.

This is joined by an 11-inch color Driver Information Center display, a six-speaker sound system, and more to enjoy as you drive each day. Available options and upgrades include a wireless charging pad, selectable multi-color ambient interior lighting, and a head-up display that projects information onto your windshield.

Looking at the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5, it has a standard 12.3-inch infotainment display that’s much smaller than what Chevy gives you. This is joined by a second 12.3-inch instrument cluster display, which is nice but doesn’t make up for how much smaller the main screen is.

Higher trims have more to offer, like an available head-up display and Bose sound system (similar to the one you can get in the Equinox EV), but the higher price of those models compared to Chevy’s compact SUV makes a huge difference when considering what each has to offer. You get so much in the Equinox EV at a much lower starting price that simply can’t be beaten.

#6 – Fantastic Driver-Assistance Features

We’re pleased to say that both of these vehicles come with an impressive array of safety features—we love bragging about the Equinox EV, but we’re happy about every safe vehicle on the road. The Equinox EV comes with fantastic driver-assistance systems, starting with a Forward Collision Alert, Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, and Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking to help protect you each day. You also get Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Rear Park Assist with Reverse Automatic Braking, Blind Zone Steering Assist, Lane Keep Assist with a Lane Departure Warning, and much more.

Available options for the Equinox EV include a wide range of advanced safety tech including GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system that provides true hands-free driving on a huge number of highways across North America. Hyundai provides a lot for the IONIQ 5 including a Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist all standard. Unfortunately, some features like Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist and an advanced Parking Distance Warning system aren’t standard but available options, which is a shame.
