Five Budget-Friendly Chevy Vehicles for First-Time Drivers

Shopping for your first vehicle is an exciting experience, but it can also be overwhelming. Researching the best vehicle can be time-consuming and frustrating if you don’t know what everything means or what to look for. Luckily, we have compiled a list of our five Chevy choices for first-time buyers on a budget. Just because you are on a budget doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the features you’re looking for in a vehicle, and just because you are a first-time buyer doesn’t mean you can’t make an informed decision. As you are looking for a used Chevrolet dealer, we welcome you to visit us here at McCluskey Chevrolet and check out our extensive selection of pre-owned Chevy models. For now, let’s take a look at five models we think are perfect for drivers looking to buy their first vehicle.
The Chevy Impala
The Chevy Impala has been around for over fifty years, meaning there is plenty to choose from in the used market. The Impala ranges in price depending on condition, mileage, age, etc. Earlier Impala models tend to be collectible, so they can be a bit pricey. Since the Impala was discontinued in 2020, models from 2015 to 2020 are a good range to look for, which should be found at an affordable price.
But it isn’t on our list because of its price tag; the benefits you get for that price tag have put the Impala on our top five list. Depending on the trim and year, the Impala can seat up to six passengers, though most models typically seat five. That means plenty of room for friends, family, and cargo. The interior is designed to feel luxurious without costing extra, and each model year is packed with safety and connectivity features that are still modern and useful.
If you focus on the Impala’s last few years, you will get many of the same features available on new vehicles, like an infotainment touchscreen. Plus, with advanced safety features like automatic emergency braking and StabiliTrak, the Impala is a safe choice for new drivers. For many years, it has received an overall rating of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some models even come with a mild-hybrid system resulting in better fuel efficiency and, ultimately, less money spent at the pump.
The Chevy Sonic
In 2012, the spunky Chevy Sonic rolled out, replacing the Chevy Aveo. It was discontinued in 2020, but there are plenty of older models to choose from. The Sonic is petite and comes as either a sedan or hatchback, which means more options for cargo space. The hatchback has personality and is sure to stand out in a crowd, but the sedan is more subdued and perfect for the everyday commuter. At a typical cost of around $14,000, the Sonic offers plenty of benefits to go along with the affordable price tag. Plus, the Sonic may appeal more to the young at heart with its sporty design.
The Sonic includes sport-style front bucket seats and an instrument cluster reminiscent of a motorcycle, and the available turbocharged engine and six-speed manual transmission accentuate the spirited drive. Later models are equipped with more current infotainment features, like a touchscreen, wi-fi capabilities, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. There aren’t any over-the-top safety features, but that doesn’t stop the Sonic from being a reliable and safe car. The Sonic has received an overall five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for years, showing safety is a key factor.
The Chevy Spark
The Spark, full of pep and attitude, is a bit bigger than the Sonic but just as lively. The outside is fun, with unique detailing like a split grille, light inserts in the lower front fascia, and a bubbly body-colored rear fascia. The interior is just as fun, with two-toned finishings and a large infotainment screen that makes the Spark feel ahead of its time. The interior looks nice without being something you would worry about destroying.
Although it was discontinued in 2022, it’s a reliable Chevy packed with modern tech, easy maneuverability, stellar gas mileage, fun color options, and loads of safety features; everything a new driver would want for their first vehicle. Features like Hill Start Assist and Rear Vision Camera will give first-time drivers an added layer of confidence on the road. Some models have leather trimmings, heated seats, and convenient keyless entry to make every aspect of the driving experience convenient and comfortable. Additionally, tech upgrades like a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability make staying connected easy. What more could you need?

The Chevy Malibu
The Chevy Malibu is a striking car with a unique split grille that fans out into the fog lights, which are beautifully tucked away in the front lower fascia. Chiseled sides and a dominating sloped hood give an aggressive stance to the otherwise friendly sedan. A split-folding seat in the rear offers seating for five when needed or extended trunk space for large cargo. A two-toned interior creates a welcoming cabin, and the overall interior design makes it feel spacious for all on board.
The Malibu is one of the more pricey options on this list, but with the average price coming in at about $22,000 for nearly new, it’s not unreasonable. For that price tag, you get amenities like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, along with available remote keyless entry and remote start and integrated wi-fi capabilities. Depending on the model year, you can even see upgrades like leather power-adjustable seats; however, if you are trying to stay within a budget, there isn’t a need for such upgrades.
The Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2500
The Chevy Silverado may not be your first thought as a first-time car buyer choice, but the Silverado is a great option for some. Newer trucks can cost quite a bit, but older trucks can offer everything we love about a truck but for much less. Made to withstand the test of time, these trucks won’t let you down. With plenty of towing and hauling capabilities, this is a great option for work or fun. A tri-fold rear seat offers flexibility while providing plenty of seating for front and rear passengers. Some even come with the option for leather seats, but again, that’s up to the driver.
A suite of features makes towing and hauling easy and safe. Trailer Sway Control applies the brakes if it senses the vehicle or attached trailer beginning to sway, while integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Hill Start Assist, and StabiliTrak also increase control for added safety. Navigation, automatic headlights, and remote keyless entry are the icing on the cake for those looking for additional features.

Which Chevy Will You Choose?
There are plenty of used options out there, especially for those on a budget. Chevy has a history of making quality vehicles built to last, which is why they make fantastic first-time vehicles. You don’t have to buy the newest and shiniest to get a great vehicle, and the Chevy models on this list prove that. It can be nerve-racking buying a vehicle, especially if it’s used, but not when shopping with a trusted dealer. Inspections and history reports help you feel more confident in your choice. Many of these vehicles can be found for an extremely affordable price tag, making it an even easier choice. So, which Chevy will you choose?
