We work to bring you the latest in automotive news, to keep you up to date on everything happening in the industry. Since GM introduced its fleet of fuel cell vehicles, those vehicles have traveled over three million miles!
This milestone is great for many reasons. The first being that with those three million miles driven, over 157,894 gallons of gas were saved from being consumed. The use of hydrogen in the fuel cell vehicles like the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell, is part of a program started by GM back in 2007. Over 5,000 drivers are behind the wheel of the fuel cell vehicles, and have given General Motors feedback of the ease-of-use of the fuel cell technology. Charlie Freese is the executive director of GM’s fuel cell engineering activities, and said that, “These vehicles have operated through seven full winters and a wide range of environmental conditions, proving that fuel cells can meet the demands of real-world drivers.” General Motors is a recognized leader in the development of fuel cell technology, and just last year opened a state-of-the-art Fuel Cell Development Laboratory at the GM Powertrain World Headquarters in Pontiac, Michigan.
Back in 2013, General Motors was ranked number one in total fuel cell patents granted in the year 2013. With that number, GM currently leads all other automotive companies in total fuel cell patents approved since 2002.
