How Long Does My Chevy Warranty Last?

General Motors stands behind everything it makes. That is why it offers a warranty to protect you in the event of any kind of problem within the first years of driving your new Chevy. Of course, with hundreds of moving parts that are in constant motion, an issue can arise from time to time. While GM goes to great lengths to test everything out to ensure you have the finest product possible if such an issue does happen, Chevy has you covered with the warranty. However, if you’ve recently made a purchase or are considering a purchase, you may wonder how long is Chevy’s warranty? Here is everything you need to know to answer that exact question.

2020 Chevy Limited Warranty Coverage

If you’re shopping around for a new Chevy, you will be looking at the 2020 models. These models come with several warranties, depending on the part of the vehicle.

The warranty starts with bumper-to-bumper coverage for the first three years or up to 36,000 miles (whichever comes first). If you need to make a claim on this warranty, there is no deductible for all eligible warranty repairs.

You will receive a powertrain warranty on your Chevy vehicle. There are some slight variations to the warranty you receive based on the engine. For most 2019 and 2020 model years, you will receive coverage on the powertrain for the first five years or up to 60,000 miles (whichever comes first). If, however, you drive a pickup that uses a 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine or you have a Silverado HD (2500 or 3500) that uses the Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8, the powertrain warranty will be bumped up to five years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

There is an “Emission Control System Limited Warranty” offered through Chevy. This will cover defects on your car or light-duty pickup for the first two years or 24,000 miles. If you have a vehicle with a weight rating of over 8,500 pounds, the warranty will increase to the first five years or 50,000 miles. Additionally, if you have a truck that weighs less than this but uses the 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8, you’ll also be covered up to five years or 50,000 miles.

If you were to ever move out of metro Cincinnati and head west out to California, your warranty would be different. California has significantly stricter emission laws than anywhere else in the country. Due to this, any Chevy vehicle will be covered for up to three years or 50,000 miles. Certain specified vehicles in California will be covered for up to seven years or 70,000 miles. If you have a 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8, there are some split coverages in California. The main emissions elements within the truck will be covered up to five years or 50,000 miles, but certain specified components will receive an extension out to seven years or 70,000 miles. It’s best to check with Chevy and the state of California for exactly what is covered under the extended seven miles (but if you have no plans on moving, you won’t need to worry about this part).

If you drive an electric or hybrid Chevy, you will receive an additional warranty over the standard bumper-to-bumper coverage. In fact, certain elements of the hybrid or electric vehicle will be covered for up to eight years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first). For specific parts that are covered under this extended plan, check your owner’s manual.

Additional Coverage

If you have bought or leased a Chevy between 2018 and 2020, you will receive additional coverage. This includes the first maintenance visit within the first year (or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first) covered. All 2018 models receive two maintenance visits within the first two years or 24,000 miles, plus you receive ACDelco dexos1 Oil and ACDelco Oil Filter changes. Four-Wheel tire rotations are covered for most vehicles (if you drive a dual rear wheeled truck, a Corvette, or some Camaro models this will not be covered), and you’ll have a multi-point vehicle inspection provided.

If your vehicle remains under the powertrain limited warranty or the hybrid warranty, you will receive several emergency benefits. This includes emergency towing (to your nearest Chevy dealer), lockout service, flat tire change, emergency fuel delivery (enough fuel for you to drive to the nearest service station), Mobile EV charging, and jump-starts.

Extended Warranty

If you want to extend the coverage of your vehicle, you can push it out to cover up to five years or 60,000 miles (whichever comes first). This extended warranty option is available for model years between 2018 and 2020. This, essentially, extends your bumper-to-bumper warranty, and you will not need to pay for any kind of deductibles when your claim is accepted for this particular kind of coverage.

Certified Pre-Owned Warranty

If you decide to skip the new Chevy vehicles on the lot and instead go for one of the used options, you have the opportunity to purchase a Certified Pre-Owned Chevy. These are used Chevy models that qualify for additional protection due to being within six model years of the current model, having no more than 75,000 miles, have a clean title, pass a vehicle history report, and pass a 172-point inspection. If the vehicle can do that, it will receive its certification and comes with its own set of warranties.

For your Chevy Certified Pre-Owned vehicle, (this goes for all Buick and GMC models, although Cadillac has some slightly different pre-owned warranties), you receive a six-year or 100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty and a one year or 12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty (whichever comes first). You also will not have to pay a deductible when making a claim on these warranties.

Included in the bumper-to-bumper warranty is almost every part on the Chevy that may fail. However, if the failure occurs due to a collision, vandalism, theft, fire, or you put in the wrong fuel (such as you fill a portable fuel tank up with diesel and then pour the diesel fuel into your regular unleaded tank, this is not covered).
