Is Chevy Planning a Track-Spec Z06X?
A few posts ago we brought you the preliminary scoop on the amazing new Chevy Z06. We didn’t know at the time, but Chevy was not planning a new ZR1 version to go above the Z06, not that it even needed to. If you were upset by that news, you don’t have to be anymore! The new Z06 is so great it effectively replaces the previous ZR1, and we want some track time with the new King of Corvettes in the worst way. If some beloved track time is what you’re after, Chevy may have another trick hidden up its sleeve to give your brain that quick oil change it needs to get over that ZR1 news.
Way, way back at the SEMA show in 2010, Chevy brought out a track-tuned version of the C6 called the Z06X. The concept was put together by Corvette’s racing partner Pratt & Miller and packed the Z07 and carbon-fiber packages as well as competition-spec alloys fitted to an adjustable suspension, the C6.R’s rear wing, a full roll cage and weight-saving plastic windows. Obviously, that concept never made it to production, at least not in that generation of the Vette. News is rumbling that the concept could resurface and make it to production in the C7.R.
The Z06X could really pose as an effective challenger to the likes of vehicles like the SRT Viper TA and the Porsche 911 GT3 RS to help bridge the gap between the road-ready Z06 and C7.R unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show last week. Not only that, but it would sit nicely aside its sibling, the Camaro Z/28. We are sure that it would boast a higher sticker price than the Z/28’s (which is at $75,000), but it would likely clock even faster lap times than anything General Motors has ever offered. How cool is that?
