How to Know It’s Time for New Brakes

As part of our commitment to being one of the top Cincinnati used car dealers, McCluskey Chevrolet inspects and certifies every car we sell. We make sure that we offer you only the best quality cars at the best prices. If we find anything that needs to be repaired, one of our experienced mechanics repairs it before the car goes on sale.

While you can be sure that your car is in top driving condition when you take it off our lot, you’ll be in charge of maintaining your car’s condition after that. Establishing a relationship with a reliable mechanic, like the service department at McCluskey Chevrolet, can help you ensure that you are giving your car all the attention it needs. However, you’ll still need to be aware of the signals your car is giving you so that you can catch problems in their early stages.

Identifying the need for new brakes is one thing that most car owners can do on their own. If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to bring your car in for a look:

You Hear Squealing

Your brakes will become quite noisy when they need to be replaced. Once the rubber on the brake pads starts to wear down, a metal plate indicator will scrape on the rotor, which will create a loud squealing noise. You will hear this while you are driving, but not when you brake. You’ll even be able to hear it when your windows are up and you’re driving on the highway. It’s an undeniable sound, and it tells you that it’s time to get new brakes.

You Hear Grinding

Of course, when the rubber on the brake pads wears down enough, you will start to hear the sound of metal on metal. It will sound like a terrible grinding sound that you know is no good. You will hear this sound when you actually brake, not when you are driving. If you hear it, take your car in to get looked at immediately.

Your Car Vibrates or Pulls

As your brakes wear down, the pads may become uneven or the rotor may become warped. Your car may pull to one side when you brake, or you might feel vibration when you brake. If you notice any of these signs — whether or not you hear squealing and grinding — you need to have your brakes inspected.

If you notice any of these signs in your car, bring it in to McCluskey Chevrolet, one of the top Cincinnati used car dealers and service stations. We’ll help get your car in top shape again!
