There have been some exciting developments this past year in the pony-car segment, headlined by the 707-horsepower Dodge Challenger Hellcat and underlined by the Ford Mustang’s turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. Die-hard Chevy fans shouldn’t feel disheartened though, Chevy has a blockbuster of their own on the way, in the redesigned 2016 Chevy Camaro. Chevy already possesses some thrill-inspiring performance rides of their own with the 2015 Corvette Stingray and the 2015 Chevy SS performance sedan, but the real excitement for the new year stems from the 2016 Chevy Camaro release date and news.

Scheduled to be revealed in May of 2015 , the redesigned Camaro style has only been glimpsed in spy photographs, but is almost certainly set to be a head turner. Auto show pictures and Twitter feeds are all well and good, but what we really care about is when we can get our hands on it. When will it hit dealership showrooms? If past models are any indicator you can expect to be test driving this bad boy by late summer or early fall of 2015. All indicators point to the base price remaining in the same ballpark as the 2015 Chevy Camaro, starting around $23,705.

So, what do we know about this new Chevy performance tour de force? Chevy has revealed that the next-generation Camaro will be built around the GM Alpha platform that you will find in the Cadillac ATS. Making the move to the new Alpha platform will trim about 300-400 pounds off of the Camaro’s curb weight and give it a more sleek, sporty style akin to the Cadillac ATS with a more athletic stance.

What’s going to be under the hood though? That’s the question that everyone wants an answer to. Official specs haven’t been released as of yet, but we should get more of an idea at the January auto show. Until then, we only have intriguing speculation, like whether or not the 2016 Camaro will feature a turbocharged four-banger like the Mustang. Other exhilarating engine prospects include the fifth-generation, small-block V-8 employed by the Chevy Silverado and the explosive twin-turbo 420-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6, which powers the Cadillac CTS-V. One thing that you can bank on though, is that the redesigned Camaro most likely won’t go away from its V-6 and V-8-powered roots.
