Proper vehicle maintenance can stress a lot of people out since there are some important things to remember and the information isn’t always easy to find. Although there are plenty of basic guidelines out there, and different people swear by certain general rules, nothing is better than knowing the manufacturer’s recommended service schedule for your particular model.

Toyota makes this easy and provides you with clear instructions on how often you should have certain types of maintenance performed on your vehicle. A Note on Miles vs Months

When we examine Toyota’s service schedule for the Grand Highlander, we should first consider what they mean by “5,000 miles or six months.” What’s left unsaid but generally understood is that the choice between these two things is whichever comes first as you’re driving.

So, if you drive 5,000 miles in just three months, come in for the services that are appropriate at that point. On the other hand, if you drive only 2,000 miles in six months, you still need to bring your vehicle to us for the proper maintenance. This is true across all of these intervals, so keep that in mind.

Something else we should note is that we’ve chosen the 2024 Grand Highlander for simplicity’s sake and to act as an example. Most Grand Highlander models will have similar service requirements, and you can use this as a good general guide for many other Toyota vehicles. We still suggest looking for information on your specific model just to be sure you’re giving it the care and service it deserves.

Every 5,000 Miles or Six Months

This is the most basic service interval that you should have in mind since it’s the one that will come up most often. It sets the standard for the bare minimum you should make sure is handled properly, and it’s all pretty simple stuff so it shouldn’t take too long or be too pricey. At every 5,000 miles or six months, we can take care of the following:

• Inspect your battery cooling filter and clean if needed.
• Inspect and adjust fluid levels throughout.
• Inspect your wiper blades.
• Visually inspect your brakes.
• Rotate your tires.
• Check the position of your driver’s floor mat for safety.

You can see that’s not too much, and the biggest part of it is rotating your tires, which helps even out wear and tear on them as you drive. This can help your tires last longer and provide you with a smoother ride; over time, this can also help maintain peak fuel efficiency to save you money. Note that there are some extra maintenance steps that should be taken if you drive on a lot of dirt or dusty roads since that’s considered a “special operating condition” by Toyota; these include:

• Inspect your ball joints and dust covers.
• Inspect your drive shaft boots.
• Inspect your engine air filter and replace if needed.
• Inspect your steering linkage and boots.
• Replace your engine oil and filter.
• Check and tighten nuts and bolts on the chassis and body. (This should also be done if you use your vehicle for towing or frequently load it up with a lot of weight.)

Again, these things are pretty simple and mostly consist of extra inspections to make sure everything looks good. The biggest addition here is the need for an oil change at a more frequent interval since your engine has to work harder when dealing with this kind of driving. Dirt and dusty roads are especially hard on air filters, which is why it’s so important to check them.

Every 10,000 Miles or 12 Months

Most of the service needs to be considered at this interval are the same as the first one we looked at; these kinds of schedules are additive, so the earliest ones are always the most extensive. The major addition here is that your engine oil and filter should be replaced at this point, assuming you’re not driving on dirty and dusty roads that require you to have it done sooner. Since many people like to say you need to change your oil every 7,000 miles or so, this can be a big difference compared to such general advice; again, this is why we suggest finding out what Toyota says about your vehicle. Otherwise, just stick to the same service as before.

Every 15,000 Miles or 18 Months

For the most part, you’re looking at the same stuff that we first saw since that should be done at each of these service intervals. Once you reach this point, however, then there are some extra bits of maintenance that should be performed to make sure everything looks good. Regardless of your usual driving conditions, at this interval we’ll inspect all of the following:

• Ball joints and dust covers.
• Brake lines and hoses.
• Cabin air filter.
• Drive shaft boots.
• Engine coolant.
• Exhaust pipes and mountings.
• Radiator and condenser.
• Steering gear, linkage, and boots.

You can see that’s a pretty big list of components for us to take a look at, but since this won’t be done every year, it makes sense. Note that we’ll likely replace your cabin air filter at this point unless it’s really clean. We should also note that city driving (like in Mason and Cincinnati) and other conditions can make your cabin air filter dirty sooner, so if you feel like it’s not working great, have us take a look at it before this service milestone.

Every 30,000 Miles or 36 Months

We’ll be honest—this is a big service appointment, so be ready for it to take a little while, but it’ll be well worth it. Some math shows that everything we’ve looked at so far lines up at this point, which is why it’s so vital that we take care of everything properly for you.

In addition to the other types of service and inspections, we’ll check your brakes, fuel lines and connections, fuel tank cap gasket, and your rear differential oil if you have a four-wheel-drive model. When you put everything together, it can be a pretty long list, but we’ll do everything we can to make it quick and hassle-free for you so you can get back on the road to Mason as soon as possible.

Further Maintenance and Service Needs

After this point, there are just a few extra things worth keeping in mind, which are best to make note of together rather than try to keep track of each one individually. At every 40,000 miles or 48 months, we’ll replace your spark plugs so your engine keeps running beautifully.

At this point, Toyota also recommends that we begin visually inspecting your brakes at every basic interval (every 5,000 miles or six months) to make sure they are still good (and this won’t needed again for a while once your brake pads/discs are replaced). Otherwise, things are pretty much the same, and the major points remain every 30,000 miles, so be ready for it when you hit 60,000 and 90,000 miles (and so on).
