There’s no good substitute for a reliable heavy-duty pickup truck that’s worth its weight in gold when the going gets tough. And for those of you who look into heavy-duty pickups like the 2020 Chevy Silverado 3500HD, you definitely know there’s a reason you need so much hard working muscle—because there’s no room for anything less for the jobs that have to get done. At McCluskey Chevy, we value vehicles that are able to help out wherever needed, from towing and hauling big loads to the worksite or just to carry all the adventure gear and toys up to your favorite campsite. With the new Silverado 3500HD, there are plenty of different options available to customize your pickup for exactly what you need it to do. And of those customizations, we’ve found the Silverado 3500HD LTZ model is one of the most popular. Let’s tell you a little bit about it.

Configurations

With most pickups, you’ll have a few different options when it comes to drivetrains and types of cabs and beds. With heavy-duty Chevy Silverados, you get a couple more options on top of the normal ones. With the LTZ package, you can choose between 2WD Single, 2WD Dual, 4WD Single, or 4WD Dual.

Most trucks won’t have an option for a dual set of rear wheels, which is all the “dual” means, because it’s simply not necessary, but since we’re talking about a 2020 Chevy Silverado 3500HD, you better believe the additional support is needed in many situations. For the single rear wheel variations, you’ll have the most popular option of a Crew Cab, either with a standard or long bed. The dual rear wheel configurations will only come as Crew Cabs with long beds, which makes sense since it’s a configuration that’s meant for towing and hauling.

To further explain the difference between single rear wheel trucks and their dual rear wheel counterparts, we’ll just get straight to the most important factor. In general, a truck in the dual rear wheel configuration will have significantly higher maximum payload and maximum towing capacities. For example, a 2020 Chevy Silverado 3500HD in single rear wheel configuration has a maximum payload capacity of 4,418 lbs and a maximum conventional towing capacity of 14,500 lbs. The same pickup in dual rear wheel configuration has a maximum payload capacity of 7,442 lbs and, depending on the cab and bed configuration, a maximum conventional towing capacity of 20,000 lbs. It may seem like a simple change of features, but the outcomes are clearly quite different.

Engine Options

For the 2020 Chevy Silverado 3500HD LTZ model, there are two engine options you can choose from. The first option is a standard 6.6L V8 gas engine with an output of 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque that’s paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. You can also opt for the 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 engine that has an output of 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque and is paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. The Turbo-Diesel V8 will always be a popular choice if you’re looking for additional trailering capacity and also better fuel economy.

Add in the Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, and you have a real winner. The classic 6.6L V8 gas engine shouldn’t be overlooked, though. As a standard option, it’s a great engine filled with plenty of power to get you where you need to go and haul or tow the essentials along with you. And you may be surprised, but the V8 gas engine will typically allow for a higher maximum payload capacity than the Turbo-Diesel V8 engine will.

Design and Features

As the second-highest trim level across the 2020 Chevy Silverado 3500HD models, the LTZ comes packed with a lot of great options and features. Plus, it’s not too bad on the eyes either. With fully-chromed out bumpers, door handles, and trim; the Silverado 3500HD LTZ gives your truck a unique and powerful look. It also comes with 18-inch wheels and 18-inch all-terrain tires for those times when you’re traveling over rugged terrain.

If you go for a 4WD drivetrain, it will come included with an Autotrac 2-speed transfer case with push button controls. The four push buttons you find will allow you to switch between 2WD, Auto, 4WD, and 4WD Lo. You can set it for 2WD when you’re driving in normal conditions on paved roads, including highways. The 4WD option would be best used if you need extra traction, so using it in snowy or wet conditions would be ideal. The 4WD Lo option is meant to specifically provide additional torque to all four wheels when you’re driving through sand, mud, or snow. If you choose Auto, then the system will automatically switch to 4WD from 2WD if there is any kind of lost traction or slippage. And then it will switch back when the extra traction is no longer needed.

On the interior, you’ll find a 4.2-inch driver display and an 8-inch HD color touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibilities. Since the touchscreen is connected to the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus System, it can also connect via Bluetooth to compatible phones, use voice recognition, and be integrated with the available navigation system. You can also access the Advanced Trailering System via the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system or the myChevrolet Mobile App, especially if you’re connected to the standard 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities. With this system, it makes it easy to check trailer electrical diagnostics, trailer tire pressure, and trailer security. A heated steering wheel and heated driver and front passenger seats all come standard.

For even more great features, you can always add on any of the available packages, which include LTZ Convenience Package, LTZ Convenience Package II, LTZ Plus Package, LTZ Premium Package, and LTZ Texas Edition. Some highlights among these packages include LED cargo bed lighting, Bose premium sound system, additional safety features, a multi-color 15-inch head-up display, and 20-inch wheels and tires.
