This began with the underpinnings. The new, fully boxed steel frame was wider for more stability, and Chevy switched to front coil springs for smoother handling. 2009 to 2010: New Powertrain and Connectivity Options

Chevy largely left the Silverado alone in 2008, with the only notable change being the removal of the manual transmission option. It hit 2009 with a bang, highlighted by two new powertrains. The 2009 Silverado 1500 was one of the first hybrid trucks. The 6.0L V8 engine and dual electric motors combined for 379 hp and improved fuel efficiency on Crew Cab models.

The following year, the 4.8L and 5.3L V8 engines received small increases in power and torque. StabiliTrak became standard on all Silverado 1500 models, as did E85 Flex Fuel capability. Each trim, except the base model, received a USB port for charging and audio streaming.

2012: Creature Comforts Rule

2014: The Third Generation Rises

A full overhaul arrived in 2014 with the third-generation Silverado 1500. Chevy wasn’t kidding when it claimed the truck was “new from hood to hitch.” The body was boxier, and the cabin was larger and quieter, reflecting a focus on comfort. Chevy lowered the roofline so Cincy drivers and passengers could get in the truck more easily.

Engine-wise, Chevy dropped the 4.8L, 6.0L, and hybrid powertrains while overhauling the rest of the lineup. The 4.3L V6 engine soared from 195 to 285 hp, the 5.3L V8 engine jumped from 315 to 355 hp with a class-leading 23 MPG on the highway, and the 6.2L engine leaped from 403 to 420 hp. When paired with a Max Trailering Package, the 6.2L engine could tow 12,000 lbs.

The suspension and steering were fine-tuned for car-like handling, and the bed came with a new cargo management system. Advanced safety was also a focus, as this was the first light-duty truck to offer forward collision alerts, lane departure warnings, and parking assistance. Finally, Chevy introduced the High Country trim, signifying its re-entry to the luxury truck segment.

2015 to 2016: Third-Generation Facelift

We’re lumping these two years together because Chevy wasn’t content to sit on its third-generation laurels. The 2015 Silverado 1500 was the first to include a standard Wi-Fi hotspot, which could be activated with a subscription. The 6.2L engine was now paired with an eight-speed transmission to accelerate faster with less strain.

A fuller facelift happened in 2016. The LTZ and High Country received LED headlights and taillights to improve nighttime visibility and bulb life for around-the-clock Cincy drivers. Chevy added an eAssist option to the 5.3L engine, which was effectively a mild hybrid system to improve gas mileage without hurting towing capacity.

Infotainment-wise, if you optioned the Silverado 1500 with the larger eight-inch touchscreen, you received Apple CarPlay/Android Auto screen mirroring. The LT and LTZ were equipped with HD Radio, and certain configurations included wireless charging. One other note is that starting in 2016, the Z71 off-road package could only be added to 4WD models.

2019 to 2020: The Fourth Generation

Along with continuing third-generation production through 2019, Chevy debuted the fourth-generation Silverado 1500 that year, further modernizing it for Little Paris drivers. This included a new 2.7L turbo I-4 engine to accommodate everyday truck needs. The following year, the truck was offered with a turbo-diesel engine for the first time for highway efficiency.

The trim lineup expanded to eight with the WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, and High Country. Each had standard Bluetooth, screen mirroring, and backup cameras, with GPS navigation, satellite radio, remote start, and other optional upgrades, all via a seven- or eight-inch touchscreen.

These trucks also looked contemporary, with sleeker body lines and an upright grille. The Silverado 1500 grew in size again but placed greater emphasis on lightweight materials, a combination that further improved towing and hauling capabilities.

2022 to 2023: Updates to Engines and Infotainment

The last major shift occurred during the fourth-generation refresh. In 2022, Chevy discontinued the 4.3L V6 engine and redesigned the 2.7L turbo I-4 to increase torque from 348 to 430 lb-ft. The six-speed automatic transmission was dropped, and the towing capacity on the diesel engine jumped from 9,500 to 13,300 lbs, thanks to a new package for serious hauling.

Screens were supersized on the LT trim and up with a new 13.4-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The instrument panel included a new electronic shift control system, and Super Cruise semi-autonomous highway driving was available for the first time. The 2022 model also saw the new ZR2 trim, an all-out off-roader.

In 2023, the Duramax turbodiesel received further enhancements, increasing output from 277 hp and 460 lb-ft to 305 hp and 495 lb-ft. Chevy also added a ZR2 Bison package with even more off-road equipment.
