Wireless charging mat could be offered in the Volt as early as next year
One of the coolest things about new cars, is the technology that is being put into them. The built-in Bluetooth audio systems that allow hands free use of a cell phone, were at first a fun advancement, and now as traffic laws get more and more strict, the technology is becoming a necessity. Back-up assistant is another gem in the world of automotive technological advancements, as is the park assist which allows for hands free parallel parking. The minds behind the technology seem to get more and more creative with each passing day, and car dealerships in Cincinnati are some of the first to know about the newest gadgets that are being added to new model cars.
Most recently, General Motors has announced that they will be adding another exciting and useful gadget to some of their new models, including the Chevy Volt. The announcement from GM is in regards to wireless charging stations for devices such as smartphones, from Powermat Technologies, LTD. While this particular technology has been around for a while now, this will be the first attempt at integrating it into an actual vehicle. Getting rid of pesky charging cables means not only a clutter-free car, but also the ability to charge a device by simply setting it down. Fumbling with cords while driving can present a hazard, and the wireless power-mat would eliminate any such inconvenience.
Users of the power-mat would need to have the technology built into their smartphone, or buy a case that is able to accept the charge. GM and Powermat Technologies have not set a definite timeline when the technology will be available in cars, but says that it will most likely become available mid-2014 and the Chevrolet Volt will be one of the first models to have it.
