5 Reasons Why the Chevy Malibu Is a Fantastic Commuter Car

As a Chevy dealership, it should come as no surprise that we’re fans of the Chevy lineup, but we recognize that not every vehicle is right for every driver. That’s one of the biggest reasons we love this lineup, actually, because there are so many different models available that it makes it easy for us to find the vehicle that is right for each person we work with. Whether you’re looking for a Chevy Malibu for sale or just checking out your options and considering the Malibu for your next ride, you’re probably wondering what this car offers that makes so many people choose it as their favorite commuter vehicle.
That’s a great question, and honestly, it doesn’t take very long to start seeing all of the excellent features on the Chevy Malibu that make it such a popular option. It might not have the kind of power and performance as something like the Camaro or Corvette or as much space inside as a crossover SUV, but what it does have is everything you could want in a midsize sedan. Whether you typically drive alone, need something that’s perfect for date night, or have a family that you need to bring along with you, the Malibu delivers. Let’s take a closer look at what it offers and see why this is such a fantastic commuter car.
Reason #1: Fantastic Fuel Efficiency
One of the biggest things we look for in a commuter car is great fuel economy. Whether you have a long daily commute, need to drive to different locations for your job, or just tend to spend a lot of time on the road, this is invaluable. While a hybrid or all-electric model is going to be the most efficient option, not everyone is ready to make the change and leave the gas pump behind. The 2023 Chevy Malibu is still a conventional gas-engine vehicle, but it’s also incredibly efficient for what it does.
Based on EPA estimates, the Malibu gets 29 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the highway, with a combined fuel economy of 32 MPG. If you’re mostly driving in the city, then you can expect to get up to 458 miles of city driving from a full tank, while the highway cruising range with the Malibu is up to 569 miles from a full tank. That’s a fantastic amount of distance and remarkable efficiency that will help keep your gas costs low and let you go a long time between stops at the gas pump. You might expect these kinds of numbers from a compact model, but to find them with a midsize sedan is exceptional.

Reason #2: Incredible Comfort Inside
It’s easy to get so wrapped up in specs like fuel economy or horsepower that you overlook one of the most important things with any car: how comfortable it is inside. There are four different trims available for the Malibu, which will impact the features you find in it, but starting comfort includes premium cloth seating––no vinyl here––along with six-way adjustable driver and front-passenger seats. You also get standard air conditioning that helps ensure you and your passengers are comfortable all throughout the year.
Looking at the highest 2LT trim, you will find some advanced features that ensure incredible comfort while you’re on the road. With the 2LT, you get perforated leather-appointed seating for added luxury and comfort, with heated and ventilated front seats, which include an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and six-way power front-passenger seat. These include power lumbar control, which is perfect for long trips, plus a heated steering wheel and dual-zone automatic climate control for exceptional comfort throughout the cabin of the Malibu.
Reason #3: Impressive Technology
Although comfort features should certainly be at the forefront when you’re looking at a commuter car, you don’t want to overlook some slick technology. Great tech features aren’t just flashy, though they certainly can be; they make your drive easier and provide you with useful tools while you’re on the road. Every 2023 Malibu comes with an eight-inch infotainment display that is easy to use and makes it simple to view apps and navigation information; plus, Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. A six-speaker sound system is standard in the starting trim, along with keyless start and open, cruise control, and a manually-adjustable day/night rearview mirror.
Looking at the highest 2LT trim on the Malibu, you get Navigation functionality included with the Infotainment system, along with a stunning nine-speaker Bose premium sound system that can make a long drive much more enjoyable. This higher trim features memory settings for the seat and outside mirrors, which is perfect if you have a partner you share your car with, plus an eight-inch Driver Information Center display and remote start through the key fob. A wireless charging pad comes with the 2LT trim, along with numerous USB ports and an auto-dimming rearview mirror that’s great if you drive a lot throughout the day.

Reason #4: Excellent Safety Features
If we could only look at one thing about any vehicle, whether it’s a car, truck, or SUV, before deciding on which model to choose, then it would be its safety features. At the end of the day, nothing else about a commuter vehicle matters if it can’t help keep you safe on the road and get you home at the end of the day. Standard safety features on the Malibu are excellent, and every model comes with a Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Front Pedestrian Braking. You also get a Lane Keep Assist system with a Lane Departure Warning on every model, plus a Following Distance Indicator to help protect you.
Higher trims of the 2023 Malibu include a few extra safety features, but we love how comprehensive the standard features are on every model. Looking at the highest 2LT trim, for example, you also get LED daytime running lamps to help keep the road ahead of you illuminated at all times, plus an HD display for the Rear Vision Camera to provide you with a clear view of the area behind your car. If you have someone who is going to start learning to drive soon, then the standard Teen Driver safety system on the Malibu is fantastic. It lets you tie certain features to a particular key fob, so it will only operate while your teen is driving, which can do things like limit music volume and prevent the vehicle from being shifted out of park if the driver’s seat belt is not fastened.
Reason #5: Plenty of Space Inside
While the Chevy Malibu certainly doesn’t have as much room inside of it as a larger SUV model, its midsize design still gives you plenty of practical space to take advantage of. This is a two-row model with spacious seating for up to five people, giving you nearly 103 cu.ft. of total passenger volume inside. You get 41.5 inches of legroom up front, but even in the rear seats, there’s 38.1 inches of legroom, so everyone can be comfortable.
Best of all, the trunk has 15.7 cu.ft. of space inside it, which gives you a lot of room to load up luggage, bags from a day of shopping, or any equipment you might need to transport for your job. We don’t expect many carpenters to choose a Malibu over something like the Silverado pickup for getting their work done, but this is still plenty of space if you’re looking for a great commuter car. At the end of the day, words don’t do the Malibu justice, so come visit us at McCluskey Chevrolet, and we’ll show you everything this impressive car has to offer.
