Saying Goodbye to the Chevy SS: A Look Back at This Iconic Car

chevy ss discontinued

The Chevy SS, or Super Sport sedan, first arrived at Chevy dealers across the nation back in 2014. As its name suggests, the Chevy SS is a supercharged sedan that packs as much power as most two-door muscle cars on the market. At the 2017 North American International Auto Show this week, General Motors announced that the SS sedan will cease production sometime later this year. What is surely a disappointing announcement for many performance sedan enthusiasts – the discontinuation of the SS model – did not come entirely out of the blue. All Chevy SS models are produced alongside of the Holden Commodore in Australia, a brand that GM has been planning to nix since 2013. The automaker has finally solidified its plans to phase out the Holden name, and it seems to be coming at the expense of our favorite super-charged four-door Chevy model. If you were still hoping to get behind the wheel of a 2017 Chevy SS model, it might not be too late to find exceptional Chevy lease deals or low sticker prices on this soon-to-be-retired car

A Look Back at the Chevy SS Sedan

As we mourn the impending loss of the SS Sedan to the bowtie brand lineup, we can’t help but reminisce about the impact it had on the industry. Albeit a short-lived history, the past of this iconic super-powered sedan is as interesting as it is impressive. Let’s explore each model year of the Chevy SS, below:

  • 2014 Chevrolet SS – Since 1996, one very important type of vehicle had been missing from the Chevy lineup – a rear-wheel drive sedan. The introduction of the 2014 SS changed all that, and brought a new level of power and performance to the otherwise dull vehicle segment. The full-size sedan was first brought to dealer showrooms with a 6.2-liter V8 engine under the hood, which was able to produce an astonishing 415 horsepower, and a matching 415 lb.-ft. of torque. With an EPA-estimated 21 miles per gallon on the highway, this impressively powerful car still managed to deliver a decent fuel economy rating. As incredibly powerful as the 2014 SS sedan was when it first came out, true muscle car enthusiasts were disappointed by the fact that it was only available with a six-speed automatic transmission. Despite this fact, buyers still flocked to the capable sedan, which featured HID headlights, Brembo Brakes, 19-inch wheels, an intelligent key fob, and the latest Chevy MyLink infotainment system. All in all, this car was a welcome addition to the Chevrolet lineup, and was offered at a modest price of $45,770.
  • 2015 Chevrolet SS – Jumping up in price by just shy of $1,000, the 2015 Chevy SS arrived at dealerships with a starting MSRP of $46,740. This modern take on a vintage muscle car was quickly becoming a popular choice among performance junkies, and the 2015 version of the sedan brought with it even more cred in terms of capability. One of the most disliked aspects of the 2014 model was that it did not offer an optional manual transmission. Chevrolet and General Motors noted this critique, and offered the 2015 Chevy SS with an optional six-speed manual transmission, along with the original automatic. Other updates to this particular model year included OnStar 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity, and new standard performance enhancements like Magnetic Ride Control and Brembo rear disc brakes.
  • 2016 Chevrolet SS – Still available at Chevy dealerships across the country, the 2016 Chevrolet SS sedan starts at $46,575 – a decrease in price from the previous model year. Still offered with the standard 6.2-liter V8 engine, this version of the SS manages the same horsepower and torque ratings as well. Few changes have been made to the 2016 SS sedan from the outgoing model year, but it is worth noting that this version included optional safety technology that many drivers find beneficial while out on the road at high speeds. Rear cross traffic alert, side blind zone alert, lane departure warning, and forward collision alert, are just a few of the systems available on one of the last Chevy SS models that will be produced.
  • 2017 Chevrolet SS – The most recently available Chevy SS sedan features a starting MSRP of $46,625, which includes the powerful V8 engine, capable of going from zero to sixty miles per hour in just 4.7 seconds. The 2017 SS may be the last model that will be produced for this performance-enhanced rear-wheel drive sedan, but there is still plenty of time to purchase your very own before they sell out. The sculpted and athletically toned exterior of the latest SS sedan is a mere glimpse into all that the car offers. On the inside, standard leather seating is embroidered with the red “SS” logo, while the ten-way power adjustable heated and ventilated seats will keep you comfortable in any situation. Just as perfect inside as it is out, the latest Chevy SS is a stunner in every way imaginable.
